Song Dep SW-IDU Educational Session Brief: Condom Use Demonstration

Key Message:

  • Using condom can protect yourself and your boyfriend/spouse
  • Condom can help if you use correctly every time you have sex

Narrative: (Includes sample text, as long as the GAPMOP guidelines are followed, the OW can adjust as s/he gets more experience with it.) Also: Don’t forget to collect the UIC!

Greet, introduce, and make comfortable“Hi, my name is <Name>, I am part of the Song Dep team working on women’s health issues. My job is to support you as you make healthy decisions and any conversation we have is private. May I take 15 minutes of your time to talk about some easy steps you can take to protect your health?”

Attract/Make Initial Impact(Show a sample of Number One condom). “Let’s imagine that there is a sex worker working in karaoke bar. Her name is Thu. She usually uses condoms with clients. Sometimes condoms break or slip off during sex. Clients complain that theydo not feel comfortable using condoms.

Prompt TG to personalize“Can you tell me a little about Thu? Why do you think she is having these problems?Have you ever had a condom break or slip off during sex? What Thu can do with these problems?

Make the connection to the problem:It sounds like she is not using condoms correctly. Condoms that are expired or otherwise low quality, put on incorrectly, or used with oil-based lubricant are more likely to break. This puts both partners at risk of HIV or STI transmission. If condoms break clients may feel like it is better simply to not use condoms; which is dangerous.

Offer desired behavior/action as the solution, sell the benefits:“If you use a good quality condom correctly, there is very low chance that it will break or slip off during sex. How many times have you put a condom on a model in front of an outreach worker or peer educator?” Target: minimum 4 times. If they have not met the minimum, first demonstrate the correct way and ask them to repeat. If they have already met the minimum, give them an additional challenge and use a blindfold. If they do it incorrectly, give them feedback so they can do it correctly.

How to put on a condom correctly:

•Make sure condom has not expired and check condom package & condom for tears

• Carefully tear open the pack, making sure not to tear the condom

•The shiny, lubricated side of the condom should be on the outside, so the condom can easily be rolled down the penis

•Pinching the top of the condom, roll the condom all the way down the erect penis to the base. The entire penis should be covered by condom.

•(Option, but recommended) Use water-based lubricant. Liberally apply on the outside of the condom and around and in the vagina. If drying or friction occurs during sex, apply more lubricant

•If the condom breaks, stop sex. You should use a new condom.

•After ejaculation and while the penis is still erect, withdraw the penis, holding the condom by the base so no semen spills on your partner.

•Holding the base of the condom, pull down. The condom should come off. If you wish, tie it in a knot.

•Dispose of condoms in a trash can. Do not try to flush condoms!

If clients complain about that condoms reduce pleasure, you may want to introduce water-based lubricant if you have not already.

Prompt TG to take actionYou should have enough practice choosing good quality condoms and correctly putting them on that you’d feel confident that you can put them on in many different and challenging scenarios- such as in a rush, in the dark, and in non-traditional spaces. Do you feel confident you can do this?

Desired Action: SWs should use condoms consistently and correctly each time.
