HEARTFELT THANKS

On May 31st, the Camarillo Heights PTC was able to provide the students an amazing afternoon of FUNat our Carnival. As the children excitedly ran from booth to booth, picked out prizes, bid on baskets, all while eating the amazing food provided, they may not have seen the effort behind organizing it,setting it up, stocking it, running it, nor cleaning it all up. They DID have the time of their life because of the selfless parents who put in huge amounts of hours planning it. They will tell you it was the best one yet because of the parents, siblings, relatives, Camarillo High School students, Rio Mesa High School students, and Monte Vista Middle School students who volunteered hours upon hours at this event. If you were one of our volunteers, we just could not have done this without you. A heartfelt thank you to all of you! ~ Belinda Brown

JOG-A-THON

The Jog-a-thon committee needs your help! There are lots of opportunities to get involved, even for parents that don't think they have a lot of time to volunteer. Please contact Becky Kamola to get involved in planning this great fundraiser that earns money to enrich your child's education.

YEARBOOKS

Yearbooks will be distributed next week. They look great! We only have 34 left for purchase. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis at $25 per book. Thank you to Cassie Winfrey and Mrs. Allen for a job well done!

ATTENTION 3rd & 4th GRADE STUDENTS: IT IS

SIGN-UP TIME FOR ROBOTICS!

Robotics Roundup is Pleasant Valley Education Foundation’s most exciting technology-based program. 2013 will be the 6th year for your chance to participate in FIRST LEGO League. (FLL) The FLL Robotics program is designed with science and technology and teaches employment and life skills. This program is an opportunity for students to participate in a technology-based after-school activity which includes design, building, testing and programming of autonomous robots to accomplish challenge missions. The activity also includes a project in which the children create an innovative solution to a real-world problem. The project requires research, analysis and presentation. The FLL season culminates in one or more tournaments which give the teams exciting competitive opportunities. Visit the website for more information and be sure to check out the YouTube videos of FLL in action. If you would like to be a part of the Cam Heights team, please contact: Mrs. Karen Allen at orin room 10. We are also in need of a parent team leader.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

What a great year! First, I want to thank you all for making my first year at Camarillo Heights a wonderful experience. I have enjoyed getting to know the students (I know most of their names now!) and becoming a part of the wonderful tradition that is Camarillo Heights.

This year has been a year of growth at Camarillo Heights. Several projects are underway. You have probably noticed that the exterior of the “old” library has been restored. The interior will undergo work over the summer. This move created space for us to move our child care facility closer to the front of the campus for the 2013-2014 school year. Also, the transitional kindergarten classroom will be next to the kindergarten classrooms. We are also VERY excited to have a specific classroom lab dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) exploration. Teachers will utilize the space on a regular schedule, thereby increasing hands-on learning opportunities for their students. We will continue adding to the learning opportunities in the STEM lab through our fundraising efforts as we begin to pave the path to our future. Teachers are currently in the process of planning units of instruction based on the next generation science standards (NGSS) which call for the incorporation of technology and engineering into science exploration.

As our campus makes the shift to a STEM focused campus, we encourage parents with STEM field backgrounds and/or careers to contact us as we would like to partner with you to provide students with exposure to STEM career exploration. This could be coming into a classroom to provide information about your STEM field or facilitating a hands-on activity that really shows students what your STEM field is like. The earlier we provide early positive exposure to STEM experiences, the more successful students will feel as they continue to engage in more challenging STEM material.

This year, thanks to the generous support of PTC, we were able to provide reading and math intervention to students at risk. Our staff in our primary grades revisited the grouping structure for Late Lions really focusing on providing in-depth skill specific intervention. Our efforts in meeting all students’ needs will continue to expand as we explore the “Walk to Learn” model next year. This will provide a specific time period for students to receive intervention, additional practice or enrichment opportunities. We are also excited to move to our new “Play then Eat” model in which students in grades 1-5 will play before eating. You will be receiving information on this exciting change.

I hope you all have an outstanding summer. Please remember to read with your child and encourage your child to read independently. See you next year.

~Veronica Ortega-Myers, Principal
