Ms. DiGiacomo - Research Project #1 - English 9
College and Scholarship Requirements
This is NOT a traditional research paper. This project will enhance your understanding of researching and documentation skills, but instead of writing a traditional research paper you will be creating a presentation that shows what you have learned through your research. Your presentation must include two projects: a large “recruitment poster” for the college you have chosen to research, and a flyer explaining at least four scholarships. Each project must illustrate and reflect what you have LEARNED through your research. Do NOT base a presentation on current knowledge. Your presentation must also exhibit your understanding of the information you are presenting.
You may not simply xerox or print information. You must READ the information and write the pertinent (important) information down on your note cards. All drafts, notes, ideas, ANYTHING & EVERYTHING pertaining to this project needs to be kept and turned in.NOTHING should be thrown out. If you change your mind about something, simply put an X through it. Who knows, you made need it later on. If nothing else, it shows me you were thinking.
Because of the nature of the way your research is being presented, it does not include normal in text citations. HOWEVER, you must complete and turn in a standard bibliography / work cited page (utilizing proper MLA citation format) before your presentations. I encourage you to acquaint yourself with, and utilize, the website easybib.com for this portion of the research project.
As with a traditional research paper, you will be required to use a multitude of different resources such as books, internet, encyclopedia, interviews, etc... You must have a MINIMUM of SIXreliable sources. For the college research you must utilize at least two sources. The colleges’ website is usually a good place to start. Two other good web sites for college information are and There are numerous scholarship sites on the internet; and two that might prove to be useful. Guidance counselors can also provide you with scholarship information. Remember – ALL sources must be properly documented on your work cited page. FILL OUT YOUR WORK CITED CARD BEFORE YOU START FILLOUT NOTE CARDS FROM ANY SOURCE.
The final piece of this research project will be a reflection paper. This is where you will write about the process itself. What did you learn? Compare the research project to a research paper. What would you change? What should stay the same? How could you have improved your work? What could the teacher have done to improve the project? You must also explain why you chose the college and if you are interested in attending that school (why or why not). In general, this is where you reflect and comment on your personal experiences and thoughts about the project. This project will last approximately three weeks.
Your projects MUST include the following information:
COLLEGE: name of college; city and state of location; history (when, who and why it was founded); approximate # of students currently enrolled; types of degrees offered (associates, bachelors, masters, PhD); majors; enrollment requirements; cost of tuition (in-state and out-of-state residency); apicture of the school; twenty (20) miscellaneous facts.
SCHOLARSHIP: title of the scholarship; who sponsors the scholarship; how much is it for; who may apply; how do you apply; scholarship requirements
This is the MINIMUM required information. You may include any additional information that you feel will enhance your project.
As the rubric below will show, the main emphasis/focus of this project is LEARNING, ABSORBING, PROCESSING, AND DIGESTING INFORMATION IN A MEANINGFUL WAY.
