Welcome to Ms. Lewis’ Chemistry class! This semester, we will be studying matter, its properties, and the reactions it undergoes. Chemistry is a rigorous and demanding course, which is why I recommend that students set aside a time each day to review notes and do assignments, instead of waiting until the night before a test.
This semester, we will be studying the following units for the approximate number of days shown in parenthesis:
- Scientific inquiry/matter/measurement (10 days)
- The atom/nuclear chemistry (13 days)
- The periodic table (4 days)
- Naming & formula writing (6 days)
- Chemical reactions (7 days)
- The mole (6 days)
- Stoichiometry (8 days)
- Bonding (7 days)
- Solutions (5 days)
- States of matter (2 days)
- Gases (5 days)
- Thermochemistry (5 days)
- Kinetics & equilibrium (4 days)
- Acids & bases (5 days)
- Electrochemistry (3 days)
Supplies:
Students are asked to please bring the supplies listed below to class with them every day, including test day.
1)Assigned textbook
2)Binder, paper and five dividers (warm-ups, notes, homework, worksheets, labs)
3)Composition Notebook (ex. marble covered)
4)Highlighters
5)Pens & pencils with erasers
6)Calculator (TI-30 or higher)
Students are not allowed to share calculators in class, on tests or on benchmarks.
Grading Policy:
All tests, quizzes, labs, and other activities will receive a grade and this class grades on the point system. You can keep a grade sheet in the front of your notebook. You may record your points and the points that the work was worth. Whenever you want to, you can figure out your grade average by adding up your points, dividing by the total points then multiplying by 100

Grades in class include but are not limited to tests, quizzes, homework, warm-ups, and periodic notebook checks.
Late work will only be given a maximum of half credit and will not be accepted after the test on that material. The only exception is if a student is absent – you have 5 school days to submit work and then it will be considered late.
***It is the student’s responsibility to obtain any notes/makeup work when class is missed and all makeup work must be completed within 5 school days after the student’s return to school (missed tests must also be completed within 5 school days after the student’s return to school).
****Each student has the opportunity to retake ONE test each nine weeks. Also, each student has the opportunity to do test corrections on each test (except those that were retaken)…when completely corrected, an extra 10% will be added on to the student’s original test score. Both of these options must be completed after school, during tutoring hours or by appointment
Extra Credit:
There is an opportunity to earn extra credit over the course of the semester. More details will follow on the process for earning extra credit in Chemistry.
Tutoring:
Tutoring is available to students after school by appointment only. Students are asked to schedule an appointment with Ms. Lewis at least twenty-four (24) hours in advance.
Classroom Wiki:
There is a wiki for the class. This is a site where you can work on and submit different types of class/homework assignments. In addition, there is an updated calendar of what goes on during class in case you are absent from school. Each student will have a unique user name and password. Keep this information safe so that students outside of our class do not have access to your class work. If you do not have access to the Internet from home, you are allowed to use the computers in the library before and after school as well as during lunch (ask for a note). The wiki can be found at: We will spend one class period in the computer lab learning how to use the class wiki. Parents will need to request access to the wiki in order to view SOME of the projects/homework that is completed and posted on the wiki.
Classroom Behavior Rules:
1)Obey all school-wide rules as stated in the student folder.
2)No food or drink allowed in class – this INCLUDES gum.
3)Always be safety conscious.
4)Follow all directions the first time they are given.
5)Respect others and their property.
6)If you don’t understand ASK!
Consequences:
1)1st Offense: Verbal Warning
2)2nd Offense: 1-on-1 conference between teacher and student
3)3rd Offense: Detention and parent contact
4)4thOffense: Control Room
5)Students who completely disrupt class by deliberate defiance or gross disrespect to the teacher or another student will move directly to step #4.
Other Classroom Expectations:
1)Students are not permitted to wear hats, hoods, or bandanas in the building.
2)Students are not permitted to have cellular phones that are on or that are visible. If a cellular device is seen/hear it will be confiscated. If a student is suspected of using a cellular device during class time they will be referred to the School Resource Officer.
3)There is to be no throwing of materials or trash in the classroom.
4)Students are to be in the room BEFORE the tardy bell rings. Once in the room, students are expected to sit in their assigned seats and begin to copy and answer the warm-up questions.
5)Students are to remain in their assigned seats unless otherwise instructed by the teacher.
6)Students are not permitted to sleep in the classroom.
Helpful Hints To Be Successful In Earth Science:
1)DO NOT wait until the night before a test to study. Do not try to simply “memorize” the information. It is important for you to understand the concepts. Questions will rarely come directly from the textbook. You must be able to apply the information presented in the textbook, class notes, homework, labs, and activity sheets.
2)Complete all assignments on time. Remember, no late assignments will be accepted.
3)Read the sections of the text being discussed in class. At the minimum, read the section beforehand and once after it has been discussed in class.
4)Take good notes.
5)Read all directions on labs and handouts.
6)When you have trouble understanding something in the textbook, in class, or in a lab, PLEASE come and ASK FOR HELP! My job and my passion are to HELP YOU!
