七、閱讀測驗

Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, once defined love like this:“Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies.” Thus, in seeking your lover, you are really seeking the other half of yourself, and you can only truly live a fulfilled life after your soul is made whole. However, even when you are with your true lover, it seems that love can never last very long.

At the beginning, there seems to be a feeling of eternal love between lovers. They have great confidence that they will live “happily ever after.” But as the magic fades and daily life takes over, it seems that men continue to expect women to think and react the way men do, and women continue to expect men to feel and behave the way women do. Therefore, conflicts arise, mistrust increases, and each partner may feel that his or her own freedom and independence are being restricted. Then gradually the magic of love disappears. In fact, a recent study of a brain chemical called Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) indicates that romantic love lasts no more than one year!

This brain chemical is responsible for how “struck” people are with one another and how long they may continue to have the feeling of “being in love.” It is believed that there are three phases of being in love, and that different hormones are involved at each stage. It is in the second stage (“attraction”) that those in love always think of their loved ones. The phenomena occurring in the brains of lovers may look like mental illness. This second stage can last no more than one year. Then, in the third stage (“attachment”), the NGF in the brains of the two lovers returns to normal levels.

As time goes by, love withers, but it may blossom againif the lovers continue to respect and communicate with each other. That is, whether the relationship will last a long time depends on the couple’s ability to maintain it after their “love chemicals” stop working like a charm.
