Rationale for Student Growth Objective
(Please include content standards covered and explanation of assessment method.)
Standard: 5.1 Science Practices: Science is both a body of knowledge and an evidence-based, model-building enterprise that continually extends, refines, and revises knowledge. The four Science Practices strands encompass the knowledge and reasoning skills that students must acquire to be proficient in science.
Strand A. Understand Scientific Explanations
Strand B. Generate Scientific Evidence Through Active Investigations
Strand C. Reflect on Scientific Knowledge
Strand D. Participate Productively in Science
5.2 Physical Science: Physical science principles, including fundamental ideas about matter, energy, and motion, are powerful conceptual tools for making sense of phenomena in physical, living, and Earth systems science.
Strand A. Properties of Matter
Strand B. Changes in Matter
Strand C. Forms of Energy
Strand D. Energy Transfer and Conservation
5.3 Life Science:All students will understand that life science principles are powerful conceptual tools for making sense of the complexity, diversity, and interconnectedness of life on Earth. Order in natural systems arises in accordance with rules that govern the physical world, and the order of natural systems can be modeled and predicted through the use of mathematics.
Strand A. Organization and Development
Strand B. Matter and Energy Transformations
Strand C. Interdependence
Strand D. Heredity and Reproduction
Strand E. Evolution and Diversity
Assessment Method
Thebaseline data is based on results from a district-createdScience practices and content pre-assessment,covering the district’s yearlyseventh grade science curriculum, which is aligned tothe New Jersey Core curriculum Content. The pre-assessment consists of __ questions in both performance and written format. The performance items will require students to use equipment, write observations, and record findings during an investigation. The written items will focus mostly on content, vocabulary and basic understandings and will consist of multiple choice, short response and open -ended question. The multiple choice question will to show students’ background knowledge of concepts covered in seventhgrade.
Student Growth Objective
85% of the students who attend 80% of the time will increase their knowledge and skills relating to science concepts as measured by the pre- assessment and the post-assessment for seventh grade, by one proficiency point. All students will be expected to achieve a target score of at least 65%.
Baseline Data
(Please include what you know about your students’ performance/skills/achievement levels at the beginning of the year, as well as any additional student data or background information used in setting your objective.)
