Overall Job Purpose:

To assist in the day-to-day operation, security, maintenance and cleaning of Tamworth Castle Museum by providing front line public services to Castle visitors including reception, shop and patrolling duties. This is for seasonal cover during the main operating period of the Castle from 1st April to 4th September (for 2016)

Key Accountabilities:

  • To work under the direction of the Visitor Services Officers and Heritage and Visitor Services Manager
  • Provide front line public services to Castle visitors including reception, shop and patrolling duties.
  • Oversee and undertake the opening up of the building and the closing of the building, including being a designated key holder and be familiar with the alarm system and utilities within the building.
  • Oversee the putting up and taking down of the Castle flags
  • Use the internal radio communication system for all day to day activities within the building.
  • Deal with setting and unsetting of the alarm security system including dealing with any issues or problems that may arise during a normal working day.
  • Deal with routine enquiries, via telephone, email or in person, including the taking of bookings and the sale of event tickets in advance, over the telephone
  • Ensure that all areas of the Castle and the collections on display are tidy, clean and secure. Clean areas where necessary including all areas in the toilets, and reception, shop and Great Hall floors on a regular basis.
  • Clean areas within the Castle including period rooms, dusting and polishing, including furniture, according to a set plan provided by the Visitor Services Officers.
  • To receive incoming and outgoing goods /supplies and move such items within and to and from the building as required
  • Monitor areas of building by patrolling the site, including engaging with visitors to make them feel welcome. Tidy and re-set or replenish hands-on activities such as dressing up, magnetic puzzles and rubbing activities. Ensure these are all kept clean and tidy at the end of each day.
  • Undertake routine clerical and administrative duties, including the collection of visitor performance and financial information, and maintaining visitor records in the daily diary, recording of post in and out of the building, checking levels of worksheets, hand-outs and wedding packs.
  • Preparing packs of information for school, weddings and marketing as and when required.
  • Assist in the castle shop, selling souvenirs, admission tickets and light refreshments, replenishing shop stock on display and assisting with stock taking.
  • Clear tables and shop area of cups, saucers and other materials, maintaining a clean and pleasant environment for customers.
  • To handle cash payments, including assisting with daily cashing up and banking, and use of the Castle safe in line with Castle and Council procedures. Follow cashing up, and banking procedures as well as set-up and close-down procedures on the Haven tills, and order/collect change for till floats.
  • Assist in the preparation of exhibitions, events and school activities, including the setting up, movement or dismantling of materials, resources, furniture and event equipment.
  • Assist with group visits, undertaking guided tours and general introductory talks and respond to basic questions.
  • To support the delivery of the education programme, assisting with workshop session set up as required, and monitor the flow of school parties throughout the building, including introductory talks and health and safety briefings.
  • Undertake all designated health and safety tasks including, fire safety checks, lighting check and pathway checks, and complete all documentation as required.
  • To participate in training and development as appropriate and in accordance with Castle and Tamworth Borough Council procedures.
  • Ensure that all services are delivered in accordance with legal and statutory provisions.
  • To work flexible hours including evenings, up to and beyond 12 a.m. where required on a rota basis for special events.
  • To work weekends, Bank Holidays, and at short notice where required for Castle events and activities
  • To undertake all activities in accordance with Tamworth Borough Council’s Health and safety Policy and Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • To undertake any duties appropriate to the grade of the post and subject to the needs of the service, as directed by the Heritage and Visitor Services Manager.
