Optional Service Learning Experience

Amendment 1 to the Syllabus and Homework Schedule for Eng R ~ M/W ~ Spring 2007 ~ with Mrs. Burruss

This assignment, if chosen, will take the place of the 100 Point Novel Project and 9 hours of the 10 hours required in the LearningResourceCenter. A diagnostic test from the LRC will still be required (aprox. 30-60 minutes). The total value of this assignment will be 161 points.

Why choose Service Learning?

Service Learning goes beyond the classroom and can create experiences that may change your life. Some students will discover more about themselves and may even choose career paths through their projects. Some students will make life-long friends. Service beyond yourself enriches your life and can make you feel needed, useful, and appreciated. Service Learning can be a rewarding experience that looks great on a resume and helps you when applying for scholarships. Finally, Service Learning incorporates the idea of human coexistence and can help you mature, become more aware of the community surrounding you, and have a broader perspective on life in general. It can connect you to people who may change your life, people you may have never had the opportunity to interact with otherwise.

Explanation of the Service Learning Project

Project Reach Out

Spring Semester 2007

Dear Supervisor,

Thank you for allowing one of El Camino College’s students to volunteer at your organization this semester. This student will be giving me your name as the person with whom he or she will be working most closely.

The Service Learning Project is part of an assignment for an English class. This assignment has two main purposes: to give students an opportunity to volunteer in their community and to apply the communication skills they’re learning in class to an essay about their experience. Each student is asked to select a non-profit location, to volunteer and work at least 3 to 4 hours at this site during the semester, and to write a paper about their experience.

As the instructor, I thank you for giving students this valuable experience. Suggestions to assist the supervisor appear on the back of this letter. At the end of the volunteer period, please return the signed verification form on the back of this letter to the student. This will show that the student has met their obligation of 3 to 4 hours of community service.

If you have any questions about the program or suggestions that you would like to make, please feel free to contact me via my voicemail at 310-532-3670, ext. 4404, or through e-mail at .

Sincerely,

Mrs. Nancilyn Burruss, M.S.
