A Scholarship Fund of the Homer Foundation
2018Application and Guidelines
The Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarshipis supported through the Tin Roof Fund, a donor advised fund at the Homer Foundation. The Fund provides one $3,000 scholarship award annually, which may be used for expenses related to attending college for the purpose of continuing foreign language study, or for undertaking a language/cultural immersion experience in a foreign country. (The language/cultural immersion experience may be independently designed and does not have to involve enrollment in a formal program, but there should be a well articulated plan outlined in your personal statement. This type of award could trigger a taxable event for the recipient.)
Eligibility:
Applicant must be a HomerHigh School senior with a flair for foreign language and a curiosity about the outside world. No one related to the donor/s, members of the review committee, the Homer Foundation Board of Trustees or its employees shall be eligible for this scholarship.
Selection Criteria:
This is a competitive application process. Selection will be made without regard for race, color, national origin, gender or sexual orientation of candidate. The following criteria will be considered for selection: personal statement, resume, letters of recommendation, and a demonstrated interest and ability in foreign language/culture.

The application forms, personal statement, resume, and two letters of recommendation must be received together. Deliver your completed application and all attachments to the Homer High School Counselor’s Office by 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 12th, 2018.
Personal Statement:
In your statement please address your educational goals and future plans, what personal interest you have in foreign language and culture, and how studying foreign language and culture applies to the rest of your life.
A) For students applying to a college, please tell us where you are planning to attend, whether or not you have been accepted, your major area of study, and your career or educational goals.
B) For students applying for a language/cultural immersion opportunity, please provide your travel plans with tentative itinerary and what you hope to gain from this opportunity. Attach a projected budget and explain how you propose to meet expenses not covered by the award. In addition, you will need to attach a Statement of Support from your parents or guardian. (Note: this type of award my trigger a taxable event for the recipient.)

List any educational activities, workshops, seminars or coursework you have undertaken in foreign language.

List clubs and activities you participated in at school.
Honors/Awards
List any accomplishments or recognition you have received during your high school career.

List clubs, activities and volunteer projects with which you are involved in your community.
Employment
List any work experience you have had in the last 4 years.
The Homer Foundation manages endowed assets for the benefit of the lower Kenai Peninsula, and manages the Tin Roof Fund and administers the Alain and Daniel Rieser Scholarship.
