Sept. 1, 2004: Beslan, North Ossetia – A group of 32 heavy-armed masked men seized control of a middle school with more than 1,000 hostages, mostly children. Following a tense two-day standoff, the Russian Federal Security Service raided the building. Fighting lasted for more than 2 hours resulting in 331 civilian, 11 commandos, and 31 hostage takers deaths.

Feb. 14, 2005: Lebanon – A car bomb kills former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri and 20 others in Beirut. The group “The Nasra & Jihad Group in Greater Syria” claimed responsibility.

Jan 2, 2009: Colombo, Sri Lanka – Hours after the capture of the Tamil Tigers capital in northern Sri Lanks, a suicide bomber in Colombo struck killing three security officers and himself and wounding an additional 37 others.

Jan. 1, 2010: Lakki Marwat, Pakistan – A suicide car bomber drove his explosive-laden vehicle into a volleyball pitch as people gathered to watch a match.

Feb. 13, 2010: Pune, India – A bomb exploded at the German Bakery in Pune, a famous and touristic eatery.

Mar. 16, 2010: Dammarie-les-Lys, France – Ten ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna or Basque Homeland and Freedom) members shot dead a French gendarme near Paris. Spanish government confirmed the shooting took place after a patrol of the local police found several people robbing a garage of vehicles. One suspect was arrested on the spot and identified himself as a member of ETA. This is the first time that ETA, which had always targeted Spanish officials and policemen, kills a French national policeman.

April 4, 2010: Dagestan, Russia – A train was partially derailed by an explosion. The train was on its way from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku to Moscow. No causalities were reported. The attack was carried out by the Caucasus Mujahideen.

April 15, 2010: Yangon, Burma – Three explosions went off at a park in the former capital of Yangon, Myanmar's commercial hub. These explosions happened as revelers gathered for a New Year water festival. Most of the pavilions on the U Htaungbo Road are run by companies said to be close to the governing authorities. Previous explosions were also blamed on dissident or ethnic rebels.

May 1, 2010: New York City, New York – New York's Times Square was evacuated after the discovery of a car bomb. US government believes radical Islamists in the Pakistani Taliban directed the plot, and may have financed it

June 8, 2010: Istanbul, Turkey – A bomb attack injured 15 policemen. The attack was claimed by TAK (Teyrebazen Azadiya Kurdistan or Kurdistan Freedom Fighters).

June 25, 2010: Elazig Province Turkey – PKK (Partiya Karkeren Kurdistan or Kurdistan Workers’ Party) militants assaulted a group of villagers who were on their way home, killing and wounding both Turkish soldiers and civilians in the process.

War

Dec. 1999: Grozny, Russia – Russian soldiers killed at least 1,500 separatists while trying to leave Grozny. Another 400 separatists were killed in the mine field at Alkhan-Kala. According to Russian officials, at least 368 federal troops were killed.

Jan. 15, 2009: Racak, Kosovo – 45 Albanians were killed by Serbian troops. The killings were a culmination of the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) attacks and Serbian reprisals.

Nov. 6, 2004: Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire – A French base was bombed killing 9 French soldiers and an American Aid worker and injuring 31 others during the Cote d’Ivoire Civil War.

July 20, 2010: Souffian, Yemen – Clashes broke out between Houthis (Shia insurgent group) and members of an army-backed tribe. During the clash 49 people were killed.

Acts of Violence

Nov. 5, 2009: Ft. Hood, Texas – Gunman Malik Nadal Hasan a Major in the US Army, allegedly killed 12 soldiers and one civilian, and wounded at least 30 on the base at Ft. Hood. Initial reports indicate Hassan was upset at being deployed to Iraq

Sept. 28, 2009: Conakry, Guinea – Guinean uniformed security forces opened fire on a political rally trapped in the 28 September Stadium.

Apr. 16, 2007: Blacksburg, Va. – Gunman Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people and wounded many other before committing suicide.

Mar. 25, 2006: Seattle, Washington – 28-year-old Kyle Aaron Huff entered a rave afterparty in the southeast part of Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood and opened fire, killing six and wounding two, before committing suicide.

May 13, 2005: Andijan, Uzbekistan –Uzbek Interior Ministry and National Security Service troops fired into a crowd of protesters killing 300 – 500 people.
