Sentinel Success Advisory
COURSE SYLLABUS
2014-2015
WELCOME TO “SENTINEL SUCCESS”
This SLHS advisory class meets twice a month on Tuesdays. Advisory is an opportunity to learn more about yourself, reflect on what you have done in high school, and plan for your future. We want you to be equipped with the knowledge and resources that will help make your high school and life beyond high school experiences more successful!
EXPECTATIONS
“Sentinel Success Advisory” is your ticket towards completing the culminating project! The culminating project is now a state-wide graduation requirement, and this advisory program is being completed by all high school students in the Bethel School District. The major components of your culminating project must include your portfolio contents, 24 hours of community connection (minimum 8 hours each year, 10-12th grade only), the culminating project reflection paper (Senior Year) and yearly presentation (Student-Led Conference).
PORTFOLIO: You will need to keep a notebook to house your documents.
COMMUNITY CONNECTION: 24 hours minimum (8 each year, 10-12th grades only) of community service or a job shadow. 11th grade – 4 out of the 8 hours must be a job shadow, 12th grade – 8 hours either community service or job shadow related to personal goals as well as career/college goals. (Seniors see Culminating Project packet given in October.
REFLECTION PAPER: A paper written during your senior year that will reflect on your community connection and how it relates to your post-secondary plan.
PRESENTATION: You will be expected to complete a Student-Led Conference (SLC) at the end of each school year.
ATTENDANCE
You will participate in classroom activities and in-class assignments during advisory, so your attendance is crucial in getting all of the information. If you have an excused absence, it is your responsibility to communicate with your advisor and gather the necessary information from the advisory website.

GRADING
You will earn a “Pass”or “Fail” for each grading period and at the end of each semester. Your grade will be based on your progress in “Sentinel Success Advisory” outlined by the above expectations. If you have not earned a “Pass” at the end of each school year, you will be required to take summer school to make up missed work.
Upon successful completion of your SLC at the end of each year, along with the required community connection hours, the paper and the contents in the portfolio (at least 90% of the assignments completed each year to pass), you will earn a .125 for each school year.
You will not graduate on time if you have not passed all advisories by the end of your senior year.
BINDERS
Students are responsible for the purchase of their own portfolio binder. 2-inch binders are the ideal size for your portfolio. You may select any binder you choose. A clear viewer in the front will allow you to insert a professional cover page. If you are unable to afford a binder, please talk to your advisor or come down to the counseling center.
The contents of your portfolio will remain in your binder and will be kept with your advisor during each year of your advisory class. You may take an assignment out of your binder, if it contains homework; however, your binder must remain with your advisor’s classroom at all times.
