A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Alton Ross.
With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Alton Ross, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.
WHEREAS, Alton Ross was born on December 20, 1909, a native of Marshall County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on June 2, 2004; and
WHEREAS, Alton Ross was the loving son of the late Henry Washington Ross and Nina Mae Mardis Ross; he was the devoted husband of 68 years to Lucille Clendenon Ross; he was the loving father of two sons, Ronald Ross and Jerry Ross; he was the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, and he was the proud great-grandfather of eight great-grandchildren; and he also leaves behind a loving brother, Joe Ross; and
WHEREAS, Alton Ross was a graduate of Murray State College, and he earned his master's degree from the University of Kentucky; he began his career as principal of the school in Brewers, encompassing grades one through twelve; as principal, he also taught a full course load and often drove the high school boys to games during the 1948 basketball season, the year the team won the state championship with a perfect 36-0 record; in 1950, he came to Oldham County schools as superintendent, where he remained for 22 years; and he managed the schools during a time of population growth, and his tenure included the desegregation of schools; and
WHEREAS, in the 1950s, Alton Ross served on the Governor's Commission on Children and Youth, and he was chosen for a six-week study on rural education problems at Columbia University in New York; he was a charter member of the elementary commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and he also served as past president of the Kentucky Association of School Administrators; and
WHEREAS, the passing of Alton Ross has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Alton Ross, and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.
Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Alton Ross.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit 10 copies of this Resolution to Mrs. Lucille Clendenon Ross, 403 Fifth Avenue, LaGrange, Kentucky 40031.
