General Background

Churchill College is one of the thirty-one Colleges of the University of Cambridge and was founded in 1958 as the national memorial to Sir Winston Churchill. The Colleges provide a key proportion of student teaching: small group tutorials, known as supervisions, and residential, social and welfare facilities. Every student at Cambridge University must be a member of a College.

The College includes the Churchill Archives Centre which conserves and houses the major Churchill collection, the Thatcher papers and over 500 other important 20th century collections of papers. The College also owns the Møller Centre, situated on the main College site, which offers training and conference facilities and accommodation throughout the year in a purpose-built building provided by the Danish entrepreneur, A P Møller, in 1991.

The College has about 230 Fellows, 330 postgraduates working for a higher degree or diploma, and 485 undergraduates working for a first degree. Out of term the College provides accommodation and other facilities for residential and non-residential conferences. The College employs just over 160 non-academic staff (excluding the Møller Centre).

Babbage Forum

The Babbage Forum is a new initiative designed to support and improve policymaking. The initiative involves a multidisciplinary, international network of leading figures from economics, engineering and management. The purpose is to provide better grounded and integrated evidence, frameworks and analytical tools to policymakers. The post-holder will support the initiative, taking a hands-on coordinating role.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Event planning and co-ordination

Assist in the shaping, planning and delivery of Babbage symposium events, including liaising with donors and external parties,conducting research to identify suitable speakers, providing input into the content of events and assisting in making arrangements for the delivery of events.

  1. Publicity and marketing

Prepare a quarterly newsletter publicising the work of the forum, including researching, writing and editing content.

Build internal and external contacts and participate in networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.

Maintain and update the Programme website.

  1. Preparation of reports

Prepare reports detailing the activity and findings of the forum.

  1. Preparation of briefing documents

Prepare briefing documents for attendees at forum events.

  1. Handle queries from both internal and external contacts as the first point of contact and provide information regarding the programme to network members and other external stakeholders. This may by telephone or in writing.
  1. Create databases and records of Programme activities.
  1. Provide secretarial/clerical support. Diary management, identify suitable dates, book meeting rooms, organise catering, invite participants, organise travel, accommodation and parking, create agenda, take minutes, circulate papers and agenda and follow up on any action points.
  1. Oversee financial administration activity. Monitor resources and expenditure against budgets, process invoices, orders and expense claims, follow financial regulations, track expenditure,
  1. Any other duties that may from time to time be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes

Educated to degree level or equivalent the post holder is likely to have significant academic, professional or senior administrative background and be comfortable dealing with very senior academics, industrialists and government officials in the fields of economics, technology and management. The post-holder must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to produce a variety of written documents to the highest standards. Good organisational skillsare essential and the post-holder must be able to work without supervision. Sound IT skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) are required.

This is a fixed term positionfor 12 months in the first instance. The full time equivalent salary associated with the post is currently between and £24,528 and £26,807per annum. The position assumes a 20 hour working week, with flexibility over how these hours are worked, in discussion with the line manager. The College provides social and sporting facilities, a pension scheme, 25.5 days paid holiday per annum (pro rata) as well as a range of other benefits.
