Cix VFR Club SVFR night - Thursday 17.11.05
This route starts at Stapleford (EGSG) where the Capital Radio “Flying Eye” is based. It enters the Heathrow Class A control zone at Finchley, follows the A40 to Denham, and then uses the Burnham-Ascot route to transmit the zone. After Ascot, we head east along the M3, then across Kingston, then transit the zone to the north via Battersea. After crossing the Thames, we route north-east into the EGLC zone to leave via the Lea Valley and back to Stapleford.
Details:
EGSG (Stapleford)
This has only an a/g service (Stapleford radio) which is not staffed on Vatsim. Departure r/t will be on Unicom which is text only, so for added realism, I suggest we make all our transmissions by voice on TeamSpeak as well.
After departure route SW towards the Lea Valley, marked by a line of reservoirs. Aim to cross the reservoirs at the same point as the North Circular Road (A406). Remain below controlled airspace i.e. not above 2400ft.
Contact Thames Radar (or EGLL_N_APP if Thames is not online) for a FIS or RIS. After crossing the reservoirs, request entry to the Heathrow zone – your intentions will be to enter the zone at Finchley routing to Hanger Lane. Follow the A406 west and then southwest - you will enter the Heathrow zone about 0.5 miles east of Junction 1 of the M1. Continue southwest past the Brent reservoir, cross the railway depot at Neasden, and continue to the A40.
Request ATC approval to route west along the A40 towards Denham. Follow the A40 to the west, requesting zone transit through the Northolt Aerodrome Traffic Zone.
On reaching the M25, request zone transit via Burnham and Ascot. You will normally be asked to fly at 1000ft for the transit, as you will be flying immediately under the ILS or climb out for EGLL. Route direct to the BUR NDB (frequency 421). Ascot is almost due south of BUR – look for the edge of Windsor Forest and follow it down to Ascot.
On approaching Ascot, request ATC approval to route southeast to the M3 and then east along the M3. From Ascot fly southeast until you see the M3 and then follow it to the east until you reach junction 1.
Request ATC approval to route via the A3 and zone transit to the north via Battersea. From Junction 1 of the M3 fly due east until you reach the southern point of Richmond Park, then follow the A3 north east to Battersea. You will normally be asked to fly at 1500ft so that you are well under the ILS/climb out for EGLL.
After passing Battersea, request a route to the northeast to leave the London City zone via the Lea Valley. The zone boundary is marked by the southernmost reservoir. After leaving the zone, fly northeast until you reach the M11 and follow the motorway back to Stapleford. ATC will normally give you a FIS or RIS until the airfield is in sight. Landing is at your discretion, unless ATC advises otherwise this should be by a standard overhead join.
Detailed information about flying SVFR and in particular regulations for EGLL and EGLC zones can be found at under Airport Procedures and Diagrams.
