SELECTIVE UNIT 5 (S05)

(Experimentation & Lab Report Writing)

(April 2015)

Unit Statement: Each student will implement the Scientific Method through experimentation and create a deliverable that describes the experimental design, procedure, data collection, analysis, conclusion and evaluation.

Essential Outcomes: (must be assessed for mastery)

1.  The Student Will develop an experimental question and a hypothesis that explores a physical phenomenon.

2.  TSW identify and explicitly describe the independent, dependent and controlled variables in the context of the experiment and the experimental question.

3.  TSW develop and explicitly describe the procedure utilized to effectively test the hypothesis and answer the experimental question.

4.  TSW assemble the appropriate materials necessary to study and collect data on the experimental question.

5.  TSW create a data table and conduct graphical analysis using MS Excel, Logger Pro, Logger Lite or similar software.

6.  TSW develop a conclusion that analyzes the hypothesis and experimental question in relation to the data and graph(s).

7.  TSW conduct an evaluation and assessment of the procedure and materials utilized to complete the experiment.

8.  TSW complete a deliverable that summarizes and synthesizes the findings during experimentation and analysis.

Introduced and Practiced Outcomes:

  1. The Student Will present the experiment using a visual medium to an audience of a panel or peers.

Suggested Technology Resources:

Destiny Webpath Express (found on school’s automated library system)

Suggested Experiments:

These are teacher specific considering the abundance and variety of labs in the context of the course content.

Suggested Assessments:

1.  Provide guided instruction on procedure writing, data collection and analysis, creating graphs on software, and evaluation.

2.  Provide rubrics and guided instruction on utilizing rubrics to assist in creating deliverables.

3.  Engage in peer-to-peer review utilizing provided rubrics.

The independent (IV) & dependent (DV) variables are clearly identified?
It is clearly & specifically explained how the IV is changed & measured in each trial (instrument, units, etc)?
It is clearly & specifically explained how the DV is measured in each trial (instrument, units, etc)?
All of the controlled variables (CVs) are clearly identified & discussed (Are there more than four?)?
It is clearly explained how the CVs are specifically controlled during each trial?
Are the specific materials, their use and significance for data collection discussed and thoroughly explained?
Is the procedure detailed with regard to how data is collected?
Precision (Chemistry only): Are the number of decimal points discussed with respect to the precision of the instruments used?
Is the amount of data collected sufficient (8 data points) & discussed? (If not, is it explained as to ‘why’)?
Accuracy: The use of repeated trials in order to reduce error is discussed and thoroughly explained?
Is there a clear picture/depiction/sketch of the experimental setup?
In your opinion: Could you use this procedure as a recipe to obtain data and expect similar results?
