Announcements from Finance Council Chair: Jim Shangraw

Neale Bauman:

  • Ramp on the side of the choir and on the other side…ramp on both sides to get to the Altar.
  • 7 steps going up to the Altar.
  • Seating: Right now we can accommodate 650 people.
  • Find a way to build square footage but utilize it so we don’t have to knock out walls later on.
  • 16-17 thousand square feet per floor.
  • Choir is pushed off to the side.
  • The shape of the sanctuary is maintained: Everything in the architecture will focus right to the Altar and Tabernacle.
  • 8 doors that go out to the narthex. Help with the flow of traffic. Still have exterior exits on the sides for people to be dropped of for weddings, funerals, etc.
  • Narthex maintains its still shape. Areas for bathrooms, coats, and storage.
  • When you walk out into the narthex there is about 60 feet of openness. Have grand staircase leading down to the basement. There will be elevators leading downstairs for those who cannot use the stairs. 100% barrier free.
  • The basement will lead outside.
  • Along the Sanctuary: Cry room with the bathroom, more storage, Reconciliation,

Downstairs:

  • Bathrooms
  • Nursery
  • Kitchen Downstairs—located next to the elevators
  • Green spaces are the potential classrooms: 12 of them
  • Storage and mechanical room
  • Main gathering space opens to the Master staircase—open it up to bring some light in there.
  • Figure out a way to get daylight into the classrooms
  • 300 people can fit in the gathering space
  • Youth lounge in the basement that can open up to the gathering space.

Outside:

  • Outdoor Patio
  • Bell Tower where the triangle is on the Church
  • Two ways to get into Church from the parking lots.

The two exterior designs were presented. One design being a modern design and one more of a traditional design.

Discussion regarding two exterior designs

  • Is the modern design more affordable to design? No
  • Windows in the basement? There will figure out a way to bring daylight into the basement. Many ways to make that happen.
  • Wall behind the altar…there will be a ramp behind it. Not sure how tall. Purpose of the wall is to hide the ramp that needs to be built to get to the altar.
  • Can a third design be developed, one that combines the modern and traditional feel? One that is very attractive and inviting? Yes, he can develop another design. Really focusing on making the north side of the building, that faces 17 Mile Road. The south side of the building will not need to have as much detail as the north side.
  • Maybe take the modern looking building and incorporate the more traditional looking windows into that design.
  • Consider a green roof? Fr. Lam is against a flat roof.
  • What about flat roof during the winter? There are specific designs that can be incorporated into the structure to prevent problems.
  • Incorporate a steeple into the modern design?
  • It is important to make sure that the building clearly looks like a church.
  • Stained glass incorporated into the design? We will need to have a professional evaluate the glass to see if we can incorporate into the building. Neale is interested in taking a look at it so it can be factored into the design. A thermal barrier is necessary to protect the stained glass.
  • We can develop a plan to incorporate things (like stained glass windows) in the future, as finances allow us to do so.
  • The stained glass can also be used in the interior of the church.
  • Scale down the seating but keep building open to expansion, can a balcony be considered? A balcony is not recommended for this particular design.

Closing thoughts:

  • Work out bathroom issues: Have unisex bathrooms
  • Make another drawing with an incorporation of both types of Churches
  • Make the basement look more symmetrical.
  • Two options for the exterior of the Church were presented, but we tabled discussion on them for next meeting.
