SAVING THE RAINFOREST AND OUR HEALTH
1 Malaria is a very dangerous disease and it has spread to more and more areas around the world. What is the reason for this? A group of scientists went to Malaysia to find out why malaria was spreading among the population.
2 The scientists knew that in the past, malaria was only found in monkeys that live in the rainforest. The monkeys carry the disease, and then the disease is carried from the monkeys
to people by mosquitoes*. A mosquito first bites a monkey and then it bites a person. The scientists wanted to discover why this was happening more often now than in the past.
3 Kimberly Fornace, one of the scientists in the group, discovered the reason. She found out that the people who caught malaria lived in areas where the rainforests were cut down. Many trees were cut down in the Malaysian rainforest in order to clear land for farming and to use
the wood for building. Without trees to live in, the monkeys left the forest to look for food.
This brought them, and the disease they carried, closer to people in the nearby villages.
4 “This information will help doctors understand where the disease can develop,” Fornace says, “It can then help them protect the population from this form of malaria and treat people with the right medicine.”
5 Scientists have found that there is also a connection between the destruction of the rainforests and the spread of other serious diseases, such as ebola. It is important, therefore,
to take action in order to save not only the rainforests, but people’s lives as well.
