(Congregation may be invited to be seated for prayer.)

With the prayer “God of new life” you are invited to respond

HEAR OUR PRAYER

1.  Remembering the saints who have gone before us and giving thanks for God’s many blessings, we pray for the church, those in need and all of God’s creation

A brief period of silence.

2.  Rouse all congregations and all faith communities into a renewed life of dedication and commitment. In particular we pray for our partner Anglican Church of Canada, and for the congregations in our B.C. Synod: for Lutheran Church of the Cross in Victoria, and their pastor, Lyle McKenzie, for Good Shepherd Lutheran church in Victoria and their pastor, Guenther Sandl; and for Oakridge Lutheran Church in Vancouver as today Dorothy Chu is installed and ordained. May all faith communities small and great be blessed with people willing to serve and support the church’s ministry.

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

3.  Righteous Teacher guide the members of this congregation that they would in all circumstances encourage one another with caring words and deeds.

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

4.  Word of life, you spoke and brought this good creation into being. Guide our actions and our decisions so that the world’s resources be renewed and protected.

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

5.  Judge of the nations, guide our leaders and their people to bring down barriers of distrust so that all people would know peace and security.

6.  God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

7.  Healer of our every ill, teach us to be watchful for people who need care and understanding especially those who are often overlooked. We pray for those who are lonely, suffering from addiction or broken relationships and those who are ill and in pain. We pray particularly for those we name aloud or quietly at this time….

May all who are in need know our patience and care.

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

8. Lord, you are the giver of all good gifts

·  as we approach Remembrance Day we give you thanks for all those who in the past and in the present have

been willing to serve their country;

·  we thank you for the spouses, the children and the parents who, despite their anxiety, willingly supported those

who chose to risk their lives for the sake of others;

·  we thank you at this time for those who have known the gift of another birthday, another anniversary, or the

gift of new life;

·  finally, we thank you for those special blessings we name at this time….

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

9.  Eternal One, we give you thanks for all those whose memories remain precious to us. Grant us one day to know the full measure of your eternal life.

God of new life: HEAR OUR PRAYER.

10.  Receive our prayers and hopes, Good Shepherd and bring us safely into the eternal life of joy and peace through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

Amos 5:18-22The Day of the Lord a Dark Day

21 I hate, I despise your festivals,
and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
22 Even though you offer me your burnt-offerings and grain-offerings,
I will not accept them;
and the offerings of well-being of your fatted animals
I will not look upon.
23 Take away from me the noise of your songs;
I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
24 But let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Joshua 24:1-3a; 14-25

The Tribes Renew the Covenant

24Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. 2And Joshua said to all the people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. 3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac;

14‘Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

The Coming of the Lord

13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters,* about those who have died,* so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.* 15For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died.* 16For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord for ever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.
