RE:Fellowship competition for continuing students

The Graduate Division is seeking departmental/program nominations for fellowship competitions for continuing graduate students.

Students may be nominated for the following fellowships:

  1. Graduate Research Mentorship Programs (GRMP)
  2. Dissertation-Year Programs (DYP)

All awards are MERIT based. Priority will be given to students who have applied for extramural funding and can demonstrate other characteristics indicative of future professional success as specified in the Addendum Form.

Eligibility criteria pertinent to the fellowships can be found in the attached Guidelines describing each program. Please note that applications are no longer accepted from Ph.D. students currently in their first year of graduate school. Note also that students in M.F.A. programs are eligible for the DYP, but these students submit to a separate competition in spring quarter.

Beginning this year, the total number of applications that may be submitted by any program is limited to 10% of the total program enrollment (i.e., 10% of the total number of PhD students enrolled at the end of week 3 of fall quarter). Graduate Division will inform programs of their submission limits.

Application Instructions

  1. Students must complete all applicable information and submit electronically to their program’s Graduate Advisor by January 13, 2012. Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Advisor for Continuing (Enrolled) Students if the program has more than one graduate advisor.
  2. Graduate Advisors must rankall applications from students in their program and provide brief justification for the rankings.
  3. Graduate Advisors (or the Graduate Assistant) must submit the completed applications to the iLearn course “Graduate Division GRMP/DYP Fellowship Program 2012-2013” by January 27, 2012.

A completed upload includes:

(a) two ranking sheets with justifications; one for all GRMP applicants AND one for all DYP applicants.

(b) all applications from that program with the letters of recommendation attached so that each application with its letters constitutes a single file.

Instructions for iLearn submission:

  1. Graduate Advisors and Graduate Assistants will be enrolled in restricted access, program-specific groups on this iLearn site.
  2. To access your group, click on “Graduate Division GRMP/DYP Fellowship Program 2012-2013” under “My Courses” andthen locate the “My Groups” button on the left side of the course page.
  3. Click on the downward pointing arrowhead associated with the name ofyour graduate program to open your group. Click on “Group Discussion Board”. You will open a page that has three forums, one labeled “GRMP”, one labeled “DYP” and one labeled “Advisor Rankings.”
  4. To upload applications or rankings, click on one of these forums and then click on “Create Thread”. You can now upload a file. You must name this file in the subject line. For example, the application from Joe Smith in Anthropology applying for a GRMP should be named anth_smith_grmp. Repeat this process for each GRMP application in the GRMP forum and for each DYP application in the DYP forum. Similarly, click on the “Advisor Ranking” forum and upload your two ranking sheets by clicking on “Create Thread” for each ranking sheet. Name these files as follows: “graduate program_rankings_fellowship program” (eg., anth_rankings_grmp).

Please note that you cannot remove any files that you upload. Access to this iLearn site will be closed at the end of the day on January 27, 2012; applications will not be accepted after that date.

Graduate Advisor Ranking Sheets and Student Application forms are attached or can be downloaded from the following website by clicking on the following link,clicking on “Fellowships” and then scrolling down to GRMP/DYP fellowships.

Award notifications will be made in April, 2012.

RANKING SHEETS

To be completed by the Program Graduate Advisor

Graduate Advisors: Please solicit applications from the strongest students in your program. Rank all GRMP applicants and, separately, all DYP applicants. No two students may share a ranking. A brief justification for the rankings must accompany each list. These rankings are important for determining funding decisions. If rankings or justifications are not submitted, the applicants will be disadvantaged in the funding process. Rankings should be based on MERIT and should consider factors beyond the quality of a student’s research statement in this application (which you are not obligated to read). These factors may include: academic performance, professionalism, likelihood of completing the degree within the timeframe specified in the Addendum Form, and likelihood of success in the field. Eligibility criteria for the various awards should NOT be considered in these rankings. If you have a conflict of interest, state the conflict and ask another faculty member to rank those student(s). Avoid jargon. Your application will not be reviewed by faculty in your graduate program. Most applications will be reviewed by one scientist or engineer and by one social scientist or humanist. Make your application relevant to this audience of non-specialists in your field. Limit your statement to no more than 3 pages, 12 point font, 1 inch margins (including ALL figures and text but excluding references. Only include essential references).

GUIDELINES FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS (GRMP) DIVERSITY AWARD – DOMESTIC STUDENTS ONLY

The Graduate Research Mentorship Programs (GRMP) awards are intended to enhance the mentoring of doctoral students during their third, fourth, or fifth years of graduate study. Recipients are eligible for one, two or three quarters of support to conduct their research (includes summers).

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Must be a Ph.D. student
  2. Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  3. Must enhance the diversity of the department/graduate program

  1. Must have completed 2 years of graduate school at UCR by Fall 2012
  2. Must be actively engaged in scholarly research leading to the dissertation
  3. Must not have more than 7 units of incomplete grades
  4. Must be making acceptable progress toward the degree

Application Procedure

The following forms will need to be completed and submitted electronically by January 13, 2012 to the applicant’s Graduate Advisor:

GUIDELINES FOR DISSERTATION YEAR PROGRAMS (DYP):

The DYP awards are intended to provide support to graduate students who are nearing completion of their dissertation research and expect to complete their dissertation within the academic year in which the student receives the award.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Must be Ph.D student advanced to candidacy by January 27, 2012 or an MFA candidate
  2. Must not have more than 7 units of incomplete grades
  3. Must be able to complete the dissertation by June 2014. Priority will be given to those students able to complete the dissertation prior to Fall Quarter, 2013
  4. Must be making acceptable progress toward the degree (acceptable progress for a Ph.D. student is represented by the normative time to degree for the particular program plus 1 year).

Application Procedure

The applicant must complete and submit electronically the following forms to his/her Graduate Advisor by January 13, 2012:

  3. Research Statement
  4. Addendum Form
  5. Two letters of recommendation from faculty, one of whom must be the mentor/dissertation advisor

Support Summary

$21,600 stipend per academic year ($7,200 per quarter) plus fees

Both international and domestic students are eligible to apply. Some awards are funded by UCOP monies available only to domestic students who meet diversity criteria ( It is important that all domestic students complete the diversity form so that Graduate Division can determine an appropriate funding source for each awardee.
