Residence Hall Director

The Office of Student Affairs is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and responsible leader to serve as a Residence Hall Director at Tom Black Hall (a male residence hall). Reporting to the Director of Student Affairs, the Residence Hall Director (RD) supports Student Affairs in its mission to create an exceptional on-campus living experience. The RD trains, supervises, and evaluates a team of Resident Assistants, facilitates weekly one-on-one and team meetings, oversees programming initiatives, responds to student concerns and policy violations, and upholds all college policies.

This is a full-time, live-in position requiring day, evening, and weekend responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Staff Development

  1. Assist RAs in creating a community that is conducive to their students’ academic and personal success
  2. Facilitate weekly 1:1 meetings and RA team meetings
  3. Be available, approachable, and accessible within the residence hall to residents and RA team
  4. Uphold all College and Housing policies and procedures
  5. Serve as a Hearing Officer for low-level cases, as assigned by the Director of Student Affairs

On-Call Responsibilities

  1. Participate in an on-call rotation with other Student Affairs staff
  2. Respond to all emergency situations in a calm and responsible manner
  3. RD-on-Call hours are from 5PM to 9AM on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends and holidays
  4. While On-Call, RDs must be within a 20-minute radius from campus and be able to respond to any incident
  5. Document all incidents in a responsible and timely manner

Student Conduct

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of, and show consistency and thoroughness in defining College policies and procedures
  2. Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns
  3. Serve as the hall’s conduct officer in consultation with the Director of Student Affairs
  4. Meet with students alleged to be in violation of Residence Hall policies, adjudicate cases, and sanction
  5. Maintain conduct records by maintaining accurate files

Advising

  1. Have a great awareness of and sensitivity to cultural norms, diversity, and multiculturalism
  2. Exhibit effective listening and mediation skills
  3. Be visible, available, and approachable to the student staff and area residents
  4. Mediate conflicts between roommates when necessary
  5. Role model appropriate behavior at all times

Administrative Responsibilities

  1. In collaboration with the Director of Student Affairs, develop and facilitate training sessions during August and January RA Training
  2. Oversee and evaluate all residence hall programs, activities, and events
  3. Conduct thorough weekly walk-through of building(s)
  4. Complete a minimum of 20 office hours per week at a minimum of 5 weekdays per week
  5. All other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of 1 year of experience working in higher education; Experience in residence life or a closely related enrollment management function.

License: Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Other: Night and weekend hours are required; the ability/willingness to participate in on-call rotation is required.
