2012 - 2013MARATHON SERIES INFORMATION

Welcome to the 2012 – 2013 Canoeing WA Marathon Racing Series. The Series will be run as in the previous years using a grading system for the races, except for the 10km Championships and the State Marathon Championships.

  • So paddlers compete directly with other paddlers of similar speed regardless of craft, age or gender;
  • To simplify registration at the start and presentations at the finish of each event.

Whether you’re a regular Marathon paddler or a novice, we wish you the best, and hope that you enjoy participating.

Grade Set Up:

At the start of a season, paddlers are ranked “Fastest to Slowest” by speed based on the previous season’s results. Paddlers are grouped (“graded”) as follows:

Grade 1 top 30% of paddlers

Grade 2 next 20% of paddlers

Grade 3 next 20% of paddlers

Grade 4 next 30% of paddlers

Grade 5 Short Course Paddlers

Grade 6 Guppy U12, Novice U14, Beginner U16

Grade 7 Guppy U10

Doubles will be ranked into the same grades as singles but will have separate starts as required.

Paddlers of unknown ranking will generally start in Grade 2 unless otherwise advised by the Race Director.

Moving between Grades:

Paddlers may have their Grade changed throughout the season at the discretion of the Technical Committee.

ELIGIBILITY

The Canoeing WA Marathon Series is open to all members of International Canoe Federation (ICF)/Australian Canoeing Inc (AC)/Canoeing Western Australia Inc affiliated clubs.Paddlers who are not members of Canoeing WA affiliated club are most welcome and invited to compete in all but the state and national championship races but will NOT be eligible for points, trophies or season registration. ANNUAL AWARDS

Since the 2004-05 season the number of junior paddlers has warranted the creation of an award for both male and female junior paddlers and with the introduction of the Guppy kayak to Western Australia has enabled the creation of an award for Guppy paddler of the Series to encourage the paddlers aged 12 and under. These annual awards are now presented to most consistent in each of the main age groups.

AGE CATEGORIES

Age categories are given on Page 8. Per AC Marathon Racing Committee Marathon Racing Rules Version 2001.03(b) Variations and additions to ICF Marathon Racing Rules paragraph 2.3) Ages:

3.3a) For junior competitors, age is taken from 1 January in the year of the event.

3.3b) The first year a veteran competitor may compete in the relevant age group is the year his/her birthday matching the youngest age for that age category falls, i.e.a competitor turning 35 in the year of the event may compete in the V35+ category.

3.3c) Crews made up of competitors who individually qualify for different age categories shall compete in the category matching the age of the competitor closest to the open category following the same guidelines as those for amalgamation of classes. In the case of the crew consisting of junior and veteran competitors (and no open competitors) that crew shall compete in the open category.

Australian Canoeing maintains a register of birth dates of competitors, to categorise paddlers for age category events. Extract of birth certificate, driver's licence or similar document is sufficient verification. If a competitor sets an age record while competing in a senior category, this will be recognised, provided that the competitor has initially been entered into that same senior age category.

SCRUTINEERING

All canoes/kayaks shall have sufficient fixed buoyancy to float level when filled with water (the cockpit of a kayak or the gunwale of a canoe needs to be well clear of the water so that the boat can be bailed out). All craft are subject to unannounced spot checks at the finish line. A competitor may be disqualified if their craft or equipment fails inspection. Race organisers also may inspect competitors’ craft and buoyancy prior to the event. A paddler may NOT compete if their craft or equipment fails inspection before the official start time. In this case, entry fees are NOT refundable.

LATE REGISTRATION FEES

Under exceptional circumstances late entries may be registered until the published time of briefing at the discretion of the registrar and subject to payment of the late registration fee of $10.00. Late registration fees apply to all paddlers including those with Series Registration.

NUMBER SLOTS & COMPETITION NUMBERS

Race numbers will be provided at Registration. It is the paddler’s responsibility to ensure that the number is displayed vertically either through the use of a number slot or suitable tape (bring your own). If turn officials and timers cannot read your number, your finishing time may not be recorded. In the event that a number is lost overboard, please attempt to retrieve and return any that you find.

ENTRY PROCEDURE

Entries are accepted on the day of the race (except the State Championships see below) during the registration time before briefing. Paddlers must provide the following: FULL NAME, CLUB, AGE or Date of Birth, CRAFT TYPE and GENDER of paddler/s. Please bring your AC card, club membership card or membership receipt as proof of membership of a fully affiliated club for discount purposes. Entries close at the end of registration. Note particularly which races require a car shuffle. Please aim to be at the venue at the start of registration to enable the race to start on time.

Age categories are listed on page 8 of this book. As a summary Juniors are under 18 years of age as at January 1st of the year of the event, Guppy paddlers must be 12 years or younger and adults are all others. Age divisions within these broad categories depend on the number of paddlers registering for each race within each age group. Three registrations are required to constitute a class for a particular age group or for a ladies class in each age.

Non-members will be required to complete a declaration of fitness to compete for each race including their full name and address, contact details and emergency contact.

STARTING PROCEDURES

Start order and method will be advised at briefing. Procedures requiring advance notice are listed under the relevant race description. Please note especially those races that require a CAR SHUFFLE. All paddlers must register and complete their warm up and car shuffle before the compulsory ‘Safety and Course Notes’ briefing. Changes may be made to the published procedure in the event that weather and/or safety concerns warrant them.

SHORT COURSES

These races are for paddlers who prefer a shorter distance. Courses are usually about 6 kilometres, and if applicable, are described in the briefing. No differentiation is made between age, genders and craft types, unless sufficient entry numbers to make up a class 3 – 4 paddlers of same age and/or craft. Records are not maintained. Short course and junior course may be the same course.

JUNIORS

All JUNIOR participants under 14 years of age MUST WEAR a PFD while racing and a parent or guardian is required to consent to a junior competing. Juniors may paddle ICF recognised K1 or K2, Australian Canoeing recognised TK1 or International Guppy K1 or K2. All Paddlers are advised to wear a suitable PFD, especially if inexperienced or unsure of the conditions. All paddlers must be able to swim 50 metres in canoeing clothes and, if required, a PFD.

GUPPY RACES

Guppy races are held when suitable river conditions allow. Courses are between 2 and 7 kilometres and open to paddlers of Guppy kayaks who are 12 years of age or less. All Guppy race competitors must wear a correctly fitted PFD and have a parent or guardian’s consent to race evidenced by signature at registration. Safety of these races is paramount and the race will not take place if there are insufficient parent or helper paddlers to escort the Guppies. For rescue efforts all Guppy Craft must have a bulkhead behind the cockpit or airbags installed.

Suitably experienced social/non-racing paddlers are encouraged to nominate as escorts.

GENERAL RACE SERIES RULES

Regulations regarding conduct during the race, race procedures, safety, protests, and organisation of races will be in accordance with the ICF and Australian Canoeing Marathon Racing Rules and their amendments. All competitors must be aware of the rules and regulations. Paddlers infringing rules are liable to disqualification. Take particular note of the following points:

  1. Special entry conditions for an event are listed in the event details in this handbook.
  2. A paddler who does not attend briefingwill be considered to have withdrawn. No refund will be available.
  3. Marathon Rule 28 -- Canoe Marathon may involve participants in dangerous situations. It is a requirement that any competitor seeing another in real danger shall render all assistance in his or her power. Failure to do so may involve disqualification.
  4. Marathon Rule 28. 1) a) A competitor who alleges that his/her finishing position has been materially prejudiced by rendering assistance in accordance with ICF Rule 28 (Safety Measures) may request redress from the Competition Committee
  5. Under International Maritime Rules, all craft must keep to the starboard (right hand) side of a channel. In a head on collision situation, both craft should turn to starboard (right).
  6. Over-taking boat must keep clear of boat they are overtaking. If you are being passed you must maintain your course and not attempt to block the overtaking craft.
  7. Paddlers are not allowed under Duty of Care to put another paddler into danger.
  8. It is RECOMMENDED that a PFD (buoyancy vest) be worn by every paddler.
  9. It is COMPULSORY for a paddler under 14 to wear a correctly fitting PFD (buoyancy vest).
  10. All craft are expected to have their race number clearly visible to turn mark officials and finish line judges and timers.
  11. A two minute time penalty may be applied to anyone breaking the start.
  12. All turns must be made in an anti-clockwise direction unless otherwise advised.
  13. Portages must be completed alongside the defined course of the river, and without reducing the race distance. Portage entry and exit must be accessed only between the designated portage flags.
  14. Any paddler who crosses the finish line a second time will be disqualified.

NOTE: Canoeing WA encourages participation of ALL paddlers in ALL Marathons, in ALL types of craft.

The Marathon Series is designed to encourage paddlers to graduate to the recognised international classes.

The International Canoe Federation recognizes ONLY the K1, K2, K4, C1, and C2 competition classes, and doesNOT allow inter-class wash riding. The Australian version of the ICF rules allows for many boat types, thediscretion of the discipline committee in the conduct of State and Club Marathons, and wash riding except forinternational classes in national competitions. Canoeing WA conducts Marathons under the Australian Rules
