THE PURPOSE OF THE POST:

Methodist Action North West Ltd is a charity aimed at helping people who are homeless or in need. The charity has undergone considerable growth over recent years as its services have reached out to a greater number of people, with projects across the North West.

Methodist Action North West Ltd provides a significant number of services across the city of Preston, including a 24 hour Supported Housing Scheme, Fox Street Community, funded through Supporting People,a significant floating support contract, and a counselling centre.

Key Function:To be responsible for managing an effective service by supporting staff, service users, volunteers, and working positively with partners, to create a sustainable and productive multi agency approach.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

In addition to the relationships applied by the structure and lines of accountability, close working relationships need to be established and maintained in particular with:

  • Members of the Provider Boards and Steering Groups of the projects of Methodist Action NW
  • The Director’s Board of Methodist Action NW
  • Multi agency forums within Preston
  • Preston City Council, Primary Care Trust, NHS Trust
  • Organisations in the voluntary, community and faith sector
  • Members, Ministers and circuit staff of the Methodist Church

4.RESPONSIBILITIES

The principle responsibilities of the person performing this job are to:

To work with the manager to improve standards and outcomes for the service’s clients.

MAIN DUTIES

Clinical responsibility

1)To hold overall clinical responsibility for the service’s work, by means of acting as the point of reference for counsellors on clinical and ethical matters, and by ensuring that good professional practice in counselling continues to be defined and implemented for the service.

2)To ensure, in conjunction with clinical supervisors, that clinical practice is based on the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy, and to make alterations to operational procedures and practices where necessary to facilitate this.

3)To highlight significant clinical concerns, ethical issues or emergencies arising within the service to the Manager, and to work collaboratively with colleagues to resolve these.

4)To oversee and evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the counselling service by use of qualitative and quantitative statistical databases, and to provide regular feedback to the organisation on this.

Service management and administration

1)To take responsibility for ensuring that the service is able to offer sufficient assessments and ongoing counselling appointments on a monthly basis to keep numbers of clients in counselling, and waiting times, in line with agreed strategic targets.

2)To take responsibility for ensuring client records and information storage systems are maintained and comply with BACP guidelines, and to lead on implementing any changes and improvements to the upkeep and development of appropriate filing and administrative systems where necessary.

3)To manage any client complaints and/or counsellor performance within the counselling service, in line with Methodist Action procedures.

4)To liaise with referring professionals, including the corporate sector, and to arrange contracts where necessary for funded clients.

5)To assist in the maintenance of membership with appropriate professional bodies.

Counsellor and supervisor support and leadership

1)To recruit and induct volunteers for the counselling service, as required, such that the service is able to provide sufficient assessment and counselling hours and such that counsellors receive appropriate supervision.

2)To liaise with training establishments and select and induct student placement counsellors, in line with service requirements.

3)To provide professional support and leadership to counsellors and supervisors to ensure that the service is accountable and that systems and policies are correctly implemented.

4)To take the lead in training and development for counselling volunteers; developing, delivering and coordinating regular counsellor training.

Service development

1)To evaluate, with the Manager and Director of Operations, structures and procedures of the service to ensure that these reflect the best interest of clients and Methodist Action’s developing needs and resources.

2)To keep up to date with general counselling developments, ensuring that the service appropriately reflects these developments.

Other

1)To receive line-management supervision and appraisal, and to attend management team meetings in order to assist with personal development within your role.

  2. To work as part of a team, attend regular team meetings, undertake training as required.
  3. To oversee the personal and professional development of your staff and volunteers, and work in line with the Methodist Action line management supervision policy to ensure safe and best working practice.
  4. Promote and ensure delivery of best practice, prioritising safeguarding and the use of evidence-based practice.
  5. Encourage participation in the development of practice through regular and frequent consultation with members of staff and volunteers.
  6. Ensure agency representation at inter-agency forums, networking events and with potential external funders.
  7. Represent the charity in planning meetings, Local Authority strategy meetings and in inter-agency work when required
  8. Represent the charity on a local and national level at relevant conferences.

6.ADDITIONAL DUTIES

It is in the nature of the work of Methodist Action North West Ltdthat tasks and responsibilities are, in many circumstances, unpredictable and varied. Each staff member is, therefore, expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises, when tasks not specifically covered in their job description have to be undertaken. Such additional duties would normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and would normally be compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or task becomes a regular or frequent part of the member of staff’s job, it will be included in the job description in consultation with the member of staff.

It is expected that all Methodist Action North West Ltdemployees will understand that our work is confidential and that personal details must not be divulged to members of the public. This obligation will continue indefinitely even after termination of employment. All approaches by the media or other third parties must be referred, unanswered, to the CEO.

The person appointed to this position will satisfy the criteria identified in the Person Specification and the post is subject to a satisfactory CRB disclosure.
