Real Music from the Reel World –

Reel World String Band Performs at Niles Center

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2006) − The University of Kentucky's John Jacob Niles Center for American Music will present a concert by Reel World String Band as part the concert series "Appalachia in the Bluegrass" that explores traditional music in the Appalachian region. The Reel World String Band is said to possess soulful songwriting and instrumental virtuosity that makes for American roots music with a rare fire and authenticity. The band will perform at noon Friday, Sept. 29, in the Gallery of the Niles Center located in the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Reel WorldString Bandbrings together classic fiddling, bluegrass harmonies, and lyrical detail. The band, which is influenced by traditional and oldtime music,adds a touch of country, swing, blues, and jazz to their sound. Members include Sue Massek on banjo, Bev Futrell on guitar and harmonica, Karen Jones on fiddle, Elise Melrood on piano, and Sharon Ruble on bass. The band is considered a Kentucky historical treasure and was featured in the book "Kentucky Women: Two Centuries of Indomitable Spirit and Vision," alongside other musicians like Loretta Lynn and Helen Humes. Since Reel World's beginning, the band has spread its southern musical roots to various venues. The band, which recently released a new CD,"Live Music,"has becomea mainstay of American folk music appearing at almost every big folk festival in the U.S. and Canada.

The "Appalachia in the Bluegrass" concert series explores traditional music in the Appalachian region. The concerts represent a diversity of musical expressionwith performancesby Appalachian traditional musicians and scholars. All concerts take place at noon on Fridays in the Gallery of the Niles Center located in the Fine Arts Library across from King Library on the UK campus.
