Do you want to make a difference with a great BUSU team? You will support and assist those students at BUSU events that require first aid help. You and your team of volunteers will be present at all BUSU events assessed as having risk. People who take on this role are able to assess a medical situation, record findings and take appropriate action in an effective manner. You will provide a calming, reassuring rapport with those who have been injured. Referral for further medical attention may be necessary.
Job Summary:
The First Aid Coordinator will be responsible for the operations of the BUSU Brock First Aid Responders (BFAR). The primary duties of this position include but are not limited to recruiting volunteers, scheduling volunteers, working shifts, promotion of the services, the supervising of a table during Orientation Week to promote the services, assist with the construction and distribution of program manuals, maintain correspondence with volunteers, and prepare monthly schedules.
General Responsibilities:
  • Recruit, review applications, interview and approve volunteers for the BFAR programs
  • Provide direction on procedures and work priorities to BFAR and volunteers
  • Ensure progress is being made on initiatives and helps troubleshoot where challenges arise
  • Conduct in-session training for the patrollers and responders
  • Responsible for the storage and care of BFAR and equipment
  • Responsible for feedback on the program to the Isaac’s Bar Manager to ensure quality of service
  • Ensure all members are trained to SFA and CPR-C to ensure quality care and uniform treatment of injured/ill persons
  • Ensure members are properly trained to use first aid equipment such as personal protective equipment, splints, slings, AEDs
  • To assist the staff with Wellness Week and other health driven campaigns to promote a healthier and safer BUSU
  • Develop a first aid program with emphasis placed on teamwork, providing efficient and effective care, and goal setting
  • Sit on BUSU’s Joint Health and Safety Committee as a worker representative.
  • Support HR manager with Health and Safety policies, initiatives, department bulletin boards and compliance components
Responsibility 2: Promotion
  • Proactively promotes the BFAR programs to students, highlights its merits, and works with the Department of Residences to coordinate some joint initiatives
  • Execute a recruiting drive during Orientation Week. Organizes membership station, logistics, and keeps track of volunteer information
  • Develop in conjunction with Brock University Campus Security and Brock University Students’ Union BFAR radio codes
  • Completes thorough program evaluation reports throughout the year
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • SFA and CPR – C certified
  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Working knowledge of BUSU services.
  • Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet).
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflict in an effective and diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creative and able to innovate
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Must be a registered undergraduate student at Brock University during the term of their employment
  • Reliable transportation for after hour shifts
  • Available to work Thursday night at Isaac’s
  • Must have a minimum 60% academic average at the time of their application as confirmed by the registrar’s office
RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATION:
  • SFA instructors certification
Working Conditions:
PHYSICAL EFFORT
The majority of the work does require a high level of physical activity. The work does require you to stand for your shift, walk around, watch actions of others, the flow of the crowd and has repetitive motion. From time to time extra physical labour may be required i.e. assisting hurt, ill, or intoxicated patrons, Police along with Security and the Manager are onsite on Pub Nights and all Large Event nights to assist the first responder team
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
Event locations will change regularly. Working in outdoor and indoor environments. Weather can be a factor in work environment.
SENSORY ATTENTION
Working with and communicating with students, staff and community members. Job requires a high level of concentration and focus. Paying attention to both the big picture and the small details is required. Being able to stay calm under pressure and reassure any injured students.
MENTAL STRESS
The First Aid Responder team must be able to work flexible hours in order to be successful. Must be able to work in fast paced environment and work through complex situations which ensure that the Health and Safety of the workers and patrons is included. From time to time First Aid will deal with difficult, confrontational or intoxicated patrons. Security is onsite for event nights with the manager and police presence will be there to support any situation.
