Edwin W. Stedman Scholarship

Boston Chapter, International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety Scholarship Guidelines

Purpose

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist and promote professionalism and education within the security field by providing monetary assistance to members of the healthcare security field who are attending formal education programs. This scholarship program will help the recipients advance their careers in the healthcare security industry or other areas of protective services.

This scholarship is named on behalf of Edwin William Stedman CHPA, Life Member and Past National President of the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety and current President of the International Healthcare Security and Safety Foundation. Ed has been an active member of the Boston Chapter of IAHSS since 1974. Edwin Stedman has devoted his career helping to advance the professionalism of the healthcare security and safety field. Ed was the Chief of Police at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston from 1972-1973. He served as the Director of Security at University Hospital in Boston from 1973-1988 and the Chief of Security and Safety at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for the Aged in Boston from 1989-2000. Ed continues to be an active part of the success of the Boston Chapter of IAHSS.

Guidelines for Awarding the Scholarships

The award process will be competitive. The selection committee will choose the worthy candidate(s) to receive the award(s) based on the criteria established. The selection of the scholarship recipients will be based on merit, without regard to race, religion, sex or other demographic factors.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be currently working in a healthcare security or safety function and has been working in this field for at least one year
  • Applicant must have an exemplary work record (be a member in good standing within their department or company)
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a formal degree program
  • Applicant must be employed at a facility within Massachusetts
  • Applicant must provide all documents requested and complete the application form
  • Applicant should want to advance his/her career in the healthcare security or safety field

Criteria

The criteria of this scholarship is to identify appropriate applicant(s) who have demonstrated professionalism and exemplary performance within the security or safety field, have shown the personal traits of good character and are in the process of trying to enhance their skills through formal education.


Application Packet

Application Packet should be completely filled out. The Application Packet should include the following items

  • Personal Information Form
  • Proposed Use of Scholarship Funds
  • A minimum one page statement in which you describe your educational and career objectives
  • Recommendation /Verification of Employment Form from Direct Supervisor
  • Personal Recommendation Form (submit up to 3 personal recommendations)
  • Most recent college transcript

Responsibilities of the Recipient

The recipient understands that by accepting this scholarship he/she is required to attend to IAHSS functions in the upcoming year.

Selection Process

All applications should be received by November 30, 2013. The selection committee will review all applications and interview final candidates through the end ofDecember 2013. Applicants should be prepared to interview with the Selection Committee if named as a finalist. Every applicant will be notified in early January of the award decision.
