Students who are absent for more than one semester or summer session must apply for a leave of absence. Students who are absent for more than one semester or summer session without an approved leave of absence must apply for readmission through the Graduate School, after first receiving the endorsement of the department’s Director of Graduate Study.

For students admitted provisionally, The Graduate School must be notified by the Director of Graduate Study once the provisions have been met in order to grant full graduate funding. Ideally, this should occur by the end of the first semester in the program, and no later than upon completion of 15 semester hours of graduate credit. Students who fail to meet the provisions of their admission will be sent a letter by The Graduate School that they are no longer eligible to continue in the program. Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for graduate assistantships or fellowships until full graduate standing is achieved. Under no circumstance should provisions be modified without prior approval of the Director of Graduate Study and The Graduate School.

STEP 5: APPROVAL OF PROGRAM OF STUDY

At the completion of no more than 50% of coursework, the student requests a formal meeting with their Advisory Committee (masters thesis / project option) or advisor (coursework only option) for approval of the Plan of Study. A MS Degree in Kinesiology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro requires a minimum of 36 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s degree. For all MS Degree programs, at least 50% of the work credited toward the degree must be 600-level courses or higher. No course below the 500 level will be counted towards graduate degree requirements. The program of study may include no more than 6 hours of independent study. A minimum of 24 hours must be completed in the Department of KIN. Refer to the Graduate School Bulletin for more detail on program requirements. Additional requirements for thesis/project and coursework only options are as follows.

Transfer Credits: Ordinarily, credits transferred from graduate work taken at other institutions may not exceed one-third of the minimum required by the Program of Study (e.g. 8 credit hours not including the Thesis or Project for Thesis/Project Option, 12 credit hours Coursework Only Option). Specific course transfers are subject to approval by the recommendations of a student's Advisory Committee. The student must have earned a grade of B (3.0) or better in any course they wish to transfer. For more information on transfer credits, refer to the Graduate Bulletin.

**NOTE: TIME LIMITS

Advanced degrees awarded from UNCG indicate that our students have current, usable knowledge in their field; therefore, all requirements for the MS degree, including the thesis or project, must be completed within five academic years from the date of the first courses carrying graduate degree credit that are applicable to the students Program of Study. This means that all course work to be credited to the student’s MS degree must fall within a five-year period of time beginning with the date of first enrollment following admission to the program. If credit to be transferred was earned before enrollment at this University, the five-year period of time commences with the beginning date of the term in which the transfer credit was earned.

STEP 6: APPROVAL OF INTEGRATIVE (CAPSTONE) EXPERIENCE

According to the Graduate Bulletin, all students seeking a Master's degree must complete a capstone experience. The nature of this experience (or combination of experiences) is at the discretion of the individual academic units, and may include some combination of (a) comprehensive written or oral examination, (b) thesis or research paper, (c) portfolio, (d) creative work, or (e) internship experience. To follow are guidelines for the Coursework Only Option and the Thesis / Project Option.

COURSEWORK ONLY OPTION:

Within the Department of Kinesiology, the student’s advisor will give guidance to the integrative experience and evaluate the outcome. With the approval of the advisor, the student selects one of the following (if a course option is selected, the hours are included in the electives):

Comprehensive Examination. The student’s advisor and two other Graduate Faculty members, in consultation with the student, develop one comprehensive examination question that requires integration of various bodies of knowledge related to the student’s course of study. The question should also be related to the student’s particular professional focus. The student may use the full range of available scholarly resources including discussion with faculty in developing the answer. The completed answer must be submitted within six weeks after receiving the question. All three faculty members evaluate the questions using “pass” and “not pass” standards.
