RECOGNITION OF ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP - GENERAL GUIDELINES
Please note that the following is intended as a general guideline only and does not necessarily apply to all cases. Some cases may require further examination. If you have any queries, please contact us directly.
Unlike Canadian citizenship, Italian citizenship is based primarily on lineage rather than on place of birth, and it continues to be transferred from one generation to the next provided that the transfer is not interrupted at any point (i.e. before August 16, 1992, an Italian citizen would forfeit citizenship automatically when he/she acquired the citizenship of another country).
The process of recognition of Italian citizenship is intended for those who technically are Italian citizens, but have never been formally recognised or registered as such.
as a general rule, you may be eligible for recognition of italian citizenship if:
Ø you were born in Canada (or in another country that grants citizenship by place of birth);
Ø your parent/s was/were Italian citizens at the time of your birth (please note that before January 1, 1948, citizenship could be transferred only through the father, after this date either parent may transfer it); and,
Ø you did not acquire the citizenship of another country before August 16, 1992.
Residents of Ontario, Manitoba or NW Territories may submit application in person to this Consulate General in Toronto or to one of the affiliated Vice Consulates, if they live outside the Greater Toronto area. If you do not reside within the jurisdiction of this Consulate General, please contact your local Italian Consulate/Embassy.
