Read the Teachers’ Notes for the important background information on this topic.

This topic does not attempt to cover all aspects of Scripture; it builds on material previously studied in the scripture strand topic 11 F “Understanding the Gospel Story.” An important intention of this topic is to enable the students to recognise that the Bible is God’s book, since its writers were inspired by God to convey the message of salvation.

PART ONE - GOD’S REVELATION

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Present ideas about key Catholic teachings in regard to Revelation.

  • Read Students’ Text Book (STB) pages 2 & 3 and explain each bubble and complete Task 1, on pg 3 using the additional worksheet that is provided. This worksheet can be found at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E, Part One.

PART TWO – WHAT IS THE BIBLE

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Investigate reasons why people read the bible.

-Develop an understanding of the formation of the Bible as a record of Jewish and Christian culture.

-Identify the criteria to determine the Christian canon of Scripture.

-Recognise the differences between Catholic and Protestant Bibles.

  • Read pages 4&5 STB and complete the worksheet available for Task Two. This worksheet can be found at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E, Part Two.
  • Give students a copy of p.35 in the Teacher Guide and using the OHTs on pages 13 &14 in the old Teachers’ Book, the students fill in the dates on the timeline.
  • Read ‘Determining the Canon’ p.6 STB. Use the OHTs found on pages 36 &37 in the Teacher Guide to help explain.
  • Students complete the Bible crossword found in the Teacher Guide on p38/39. The answers are on pg 34 in the Teacher Guide.

PART THREE – WHAT IS IN THE BIBLE?

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning

-How the Old and New Testaments are organised.

-Identify and find examples of literary genres or forms found in the Old and New Testaments.

-Define literary form and explain why it is important to understand the literary forms in Scripture.

  • Read pages 7 & 8 and complete Task 4 as in the book or photocopy out the paragraph “Organisation of the Old Testament” and get the students to fill in the gaps.
  • Read p.9 as a class. Something to Do and Something to Research may be optional depending on how much biblical study your class has done.
  • Introduce ‘Literary forms’ on p.9 and 10
  • Then students can do Task 5 p.11 STB.
  • Read ‘Literary Genre’ p.12 and do worksheet instead of Something to Do. This worksheet can be found at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E, Part Three.
  • Task 6a and b students can do this but both a and b must be done in 10 words only.

PART FOUR – INTERPRETING THE BIBLE.

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Identify Catholic understandings about the authority of the Bible.

  • Read pages 13 & 14 using the ‘Panel of Experts’ strategy.
  • Discuss and then do Task 7 STB.
  • Hand out resource sheet on pg 69 in the Teacher Guide and discuss.

PART FIVE – INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE.

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Profile important aspects of Luke’s Gospel.

-Outline the process that formed the Good News

-Explain the relationship between Luke’s Gospel and the Gospels of Mark and Matthew.

  • It would be best to do pages 16 and 17 STB before p. 15. Read p.16 using the diagram of the Formation of the Gospels from 11F Teachers’ Book p.65/66. For ‘Something to Discus’ use the worksheet. This worksheet is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Five. You will need to copy the images from pg 16 and glue them onto the worksheet.
  • Explain the synoptic Gospels using the OHT on p.82 in the Teacher Guide to explain.
  • Now do p.15 STB. Read it together as a class. Distribute ‘Luke at a Glance’ resource sheet then give out the task sheet Task 8. These handouts are available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Five.

PART SIX- INFANCY NARRATIVES IN THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Distinguish features of Luke’s infancy narratives that make them different from Matthew’s.

-Explain how faith, joy and wonder are important themes in Luke’s infancy narratives.

  • Do the Getting Started “warm up” activities on p.95 in the Teacher Guide.
  • Read STB p.17 & 18 and students can do Task 10 in pairs, one reads Matthew and one reads Luke etc.
  • For Jesus and John the Baptist, distribute the resource sheet Luke’s Infancy Narratives. This handout is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Six.
  • For Task 11, put the class into 7 groups and allocate an incident to each group and get them to feed back to the class.

PART SEVEN-SOME IMPORTANT THEMES IN THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE (I)

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Recognise that journeys are important features of Luke’s Gospel that provide a framework for many of Jesus’ words and actions.

  • Read page 19 and in groups of three complete Task 12 using the additional resource sheet. Each person can take two events and then feed back the information to the others in the group.This handout is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Seven.
  • The extension activity can be done in groups of six.
  • Read p.20 and do Task 13 as a class – keep in mind the notes on p.107 in the Teacher Guide aiming questions for students to engage in critical thinking.

PART EIGHT- SOME IMPORTANT THEMES IN THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE ll

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Recognise the importance of joy, the Holy Spirit and prayer in Luke’s Gospel.

  • Read Joy-Full STB p.20.
  • Distribute bibles and the students can search and answer Task 14. Teacher records answers on the board. The students individually do “Something to Think About”.
  • Read STB p.21 The Holy Spirit and complete Task 15 and “Something to Think About” using the additional worksheet. This handout is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Eight.
  • Read Prayer on p.22 and do Task 16,using the additional worksheet provided. This handout is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Eight.

PART NINE- SOME IMPORTANT THEMES IN THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKE lll

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Recognise that in Luke’s Gospel Jesus shows God’s saving love to all people.

-Explain how Jesus’ ministry towards women and those on the margins of his society challenged the culture of his time.

  • Read together as a class “Qualities of Luke’s Gospel’ p.22/23 and “Something to Discuss”. Follow up by using the additional worksheet and distribute the resource material on pg 119 in the Teacher Guide.This worksheet is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Nine.
  • Read pages 24/25 STB and do Task 18 before Task 17. Use additional worksheet to do Task 17 to finish off this section.This worksheet is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Nine.

PART TEN-AN INTRODUCTION TO APOCALYPTIC LITERATURE

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Describe important aspects and features of apocalyptic literature.

  • Show the OHT from Old Teachers’ Book. Ask, ‘what is this picture about?’. Then read pages 25/26 using P 61/62 OHT from Old Teachers’ Book.
  • Distribute the resource sheet Apocalyptic Literature and do Task 19.This resource is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Ten.
  • Read ‘The King’s Dream’ and complete “Something to Think About”.

PART ELEVEN-AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Present accurate statements about the background and themes of the Book of Revelation.

-Demonstrate knowledge of the structure of the Book of Revelation.

  • Read p.27 and complete Task 20 using the additional worksheet. This worksheet is available at FaithCentral in the Staffroom under 12E Part Eleven.
  • Using the OHT on p.142 in the Teacher Guide complete task 21 in groups of three. Answers are on p.143/144 in the Teacher Guide.

PART TWELVE-SYMBOLS IN THE BOOK OF REVELATION

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Identify and explain the meaning of some of the symbols in the Book of Revelation.

  • Read pages 30/31. Distribute resource sheets from the Teacher Guide pg 151 and 152.
  • Do task 22 in groups of three. One does a symbol, another a colour and the third an animal.
  • Read “How the Symbols Work” and do Task 23. Distribute sheet on pg 155 in the Teacher Guide and explain with the information from the Teacher Guide on p.153. The students can fill in the information on their sheets.

PART THIRTEEN – THE MEANING OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION TODAY

Learning Outcome/Intention

Students are learning to

-Express their own responses to the Book of Revelation

-Explain the Church’s choice of readings from the Book of Revelation for the Feasts of the Assumption and All Saints.

  • Read page 34 and do Task 24.
  • Read ‘The Feasts of the Assumption and All Saints” and do ‘Something to Discuss’. For this the students could use the Internet or other resources to find a picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which uses the imagery from Chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation. The students could bring this to class and justify their choice of picture or image.
