HANDS-ON SESSION with Patrick Thibaudeau

How to Moodle, a hands-on experience.

In this session, I will be showing you hands on, how to use the basic features in Moodle, but, most importantly, the plug ins developed by my team at Campus Saint-Jean (CSJ) and shared with the global Moodle Community:

  • Language courses are essential at CSJ. We have therefore developed an online language lab that works within Moodle. It includes :
  • The ability for students to record themselves online; no need for software.
  • Send voice mails
  • Backup all recordings in the MP3 format allowing the teacher to listen to the assignments on their iPods or other MP3 device.
  • The creation of oral forums
  • Integration with the Moodle Grade book.
  • A pop up dictionary allowing students to double click on any word within a Moodle resource and get the definition.
  • The Tab display resource, which is being used worldwide, in combination with the course menu module to enhance the user experience and course structure, leaning away from the default linear Moodle course.
  • Moodle filters and how to properly use them.

*Bring your laptops. You will be doing the work! I will have a full version of Moodle(v1.9.9) including plug ins, readyto share with you.

Presenter Biography

Patrick Thibaudeau has been the IT Team Lead at Campus Saint-Jean for the past 14 years. Always keeping an open mind and an open approach to IT, Campus Saint-Jean (CSJ) has quickly become a leader in distance education at the University of Alberta.

Although Patrick had previously developed an in house Learning Management System (LMS) with a colleague, in October of 2005, he discovered Moodle and never looked back. The flexibility and stability Moodle brought was unheard of at the time. Today, all 240 courses at Campus Saint-Jean have a Moodle presence. Campus Saint-Jean is the only Faculty at the University of Alberta to have all courses within a LMS. This also means that every staff member is now using Moodle.

In 2008, he started developing with Moodle, adding features that CSJ needed. Patrick has since become an official Moodle developer and in April 2010, he and his team won the IT Innovation award at the University of Alberta.

Patrick has presented at many conferences worldwide. He is a member of the organizing committee for the 2011 Moodle Moot Canada conference. Patrick has also implemented Moodle for all 7 French school boards in Alberta and is working with Strathcona High on implementing their new Moodle based language lab.
