IMMUNITIES-

ACTIVE- when you get exposed the immune systems responds by getting sick. The body remembers this. The second time, the body fights it off.

NATURAL IMMUNITY- specific population. Same thing as why dogs don’t get measles, why humans don’t get sick with what animals do ( in some cases) also the same thing as inborn immunity.

AQUIRED IMMUMNITY- you were exposed to it. Can be in a passive form like a vaccine.

VACCINATION- injection of some antigen. Can be whole or a component of a microorganism.

TOXOIDS- inactivated toxins

PASSIVE IMMUNITY- person receives antibodies from another sourse. It lasts a few weeks or a short period of time. Ex- breast milk for the baby

MEDSURG 1-26-09 IMMUNOGLOBIN DISORDERS

RHO GAM- this is a shot that you need to administer within 72 hours to the mother that has been exposed to her fetus, (through miscarriage, delivery, abnormal process) This is only in cases where the mother is RH – and baby is RH +.

TONSILS- collect bacteria and secrete antigens to combat infection

KILLER CELLS- granulocytes- stands for granule cells (white blood cells) , they fight infection. If you have an increase greater than the normal values of 4-10.6. it indicated infection. If you have a decrease of less than the value of 0.1 it means leukemia.

WBC- has eosinophils, basophils, neutrophil, bands,

BANDS- immature phagocytes cells that eat bacteria then recycle it as waste.

-antibiotic is given to fight infection. If your WBC is too low, you might not have a choice of medication to give the patient.

BLOOD INFECTION- to figure out what kind of infection the person has, you usually take a culture then cook it in an oven at the same temp as the body. 98.6.

KEFLEX- 1ST generation cephalosporin used for gram negative infection

AMOXICILLIN- ex tooth infection, this is a gram positive infection.

-Objective, subjective data, and lab values are used to check for infection.

LYMPH NODES- are intelligent cells. When you have an ouch, it sends a messenger cell that try’s to eat the foreign body. If its successful, you don’t get an infection. If its not successful it creates antigen and send WBC to the site. When pus forms, these are dead WBC’s.

Know about the IGG’s on page 593.

GLOBULINS- are proteins

POSSIBLE REACTIONS WHEN A PERSON HAS AN ALLERGIC REACTION. – death, permanent damage, or body forms an antibody antigen.

REMICADE- made from a mouse cell protein. Its usually given together with prednisone, or Benadryl because the body tries to reject it.

EPI PEN- can cause psychotropic reaction. (Wrong spelling)

FREE RADICALS- hydrogen peroxide is an oxygen scavenger. If you pour over a would, it will suck out all the oxygen from the surface cells and leave behind dead cells.

LUPUS- there are several kinds.

HIV- T helper cells don’t work anymore. Transmitted by blood transfusions or sexual

OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS- mrsa, flu

CMD- used in kidney transplants so that the body does not reject the tissue. Usually, when there is testing done to cross match two different people, they look @ 14 different HLA types.

REJECTION- immune system says “no go”

CYCLOSPORIN- immunitarian drugs. They also put you at high risk level for infection. This drug is given during transplants.

PCP- a pneumonia specific to aids. Its recognized by x-ray because it picks up the different look of it.

NACROTIZINS- fascilitis- flesh eating bacteria

GROUP A STREP- ‘GAS’ in 98% of people that have lost their immunity. Will also be inborn if doing IV street drugs.
