As you may be aware, the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital and new RoyalHospital for Sick Children are due to open on the current Southern site early in 2015.

With this in mind, please note that positions based within the Victoria Infirmary, Mansionhouse Unit, the Western Infirmary and the current RoyalHospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill will change location and move to the new hospitals.

Gartnavel GeneralHospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary will also have some services affected by moves to the new Hospitals.

SUMMARY INFORMATION RELATING TO THIS POSITION

This is a substantive post based in the new South Glasgow University Hospital. This post is designed to support the existing vascular surgery service with the opportunity to develop a subspecialty interest as well as a research interest.

The post holder will attend theatre and clinics in several Glasgow hospitals but in-patient work will be based in the South Glasgow University Hospital.

Applicants must have full GMC registration and a Licence to Practise. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to a CCT or eligibility for specialist registration CESR (CP) or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview.

CONSULTANT IN VASCULAR SURGERY

Based at the SOUTHGLASGOWUNIVERSITYHOSPITAL with clinical opportunities across the range of NHS GG &C sites.

Job Description

1INTRODUCTION

The successful candidate will be based at the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital after Vascular Surgery has re-located from the Western Infirmary to this hospital in May 2015. The post will complement the existing vascular surgery service and there will be opportunity to developa subspecialty interest. This is a tertiary referral service covering a 1.2 million population and is the largest vascular surgery unit in Scotland.

A full range of open and endovascular arterial reconstruction surgery is currently offered, including complex EVAR and emergency TEVAR. The new hospital will give the opportunity to provide an enhanced multi-disciplinary service for diabetic feet. Renal medicine and transplant surgery will also be based on the SouthGlasgowHospital site andthere is opportunity to participate in the vascular access service. There is also provision for isolated limb perfusion as a quaternary referral service for malignant melanoma.

Vascular services will benefit from two new hybrid theatres in SouthGlasgowUniversityand the post holder will be encouraged to develop the endovascular service in collaboration with the interventional radiology colleagues.

New SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital

The new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital and Royal Hospital For Sick Children offer the potential to deliver healthcare on the Govan site to a truly exceptional standard, with maternity, children’s and adult acute hospitals, and state of the art laboratory services all together on the one campus. It will also have the biggest Critical Care complex and one of the biggest Emergency Departments in Scotland.

There will be close to 2000 beds on the SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital campus with the adult hospital, children's hospital, maternity unit and neurological institute.

2DUTIES OF THE POST

Clinical

The post holder will share the work in theatres and clinics in several Glasgow hospitals but in-patient work will be at the new SouthGlasgowUniversityHospital. The post holder will work closely with other consultant colleagues and senior trainees already in post to support the training opportunities of all junior colleagues. The postholder will be expected to participate in the clinical work of the department with inpatient care of vascular surgery patients and care of patients within the critical care environment. The postholder will provide elective and emergency operative care for patient and also provide unscheduled vascular surgery care throughout GG&C hospitals as part of the existing consultant on call rota.

We offer outpatient services at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, NewVictoriaHospital, StobhillHospital, Gartnaval GeneralHospital, New Southern University Hospital, InverclydeRoyalHospital and the RoyalAlexandraHospital in Paisley. There are day case surgery lists at Stobhill and the NewVictoriaHospital. We provide emergency cover for all these hospitals as well as support to the cardiothoracic and cardiology services at the GoldenJubileeHospital in Glasgow. We provide tertiary care support for hospitals in Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, ForthValley, Argyll and Dumfries.

On call rota approximately 1 in 7 (2Pas for emergency work).

The fixed flexible session will allow scope for subspecialty work. This will be for discussion following appointment and could relate to vascular access, interventional radiological procedures, isolated limb perfusion for melanoma, or diabetic foot work.

Extra programmed activities are subject to review no less frequently than annually and may be terminated at any time by either party to the agreement, subject to three months notice being served.

Administration

The post holder will be expected, when appropriate, to participate in the day to day running of the department in administrative activities such as organisation of on-call rotas, organisation of undergraduate training, patient reports and letters. The post holder will also be expected to participate in the weekly morbidity and mortality meeting from which an attendance register and minutes are kept to support appraisal. It is expected that the post holder will participate in the national vascular registry.

Communication

This will include participation in discussion with clinical colleagues regarding clinical problems at the weekly multi-disciplinary x-ray meeting. Discussion with support staff to ensure appropriate patient management. Liaison with specialists in other hospitals/agencies, such as GPs, district nurses, ambulance, police etc if needed.

3EDUCATION

Continuing Education

The appointee will be expected to participate in educational activities on a local and national basis. The hospital enjoys a new teaching and learning centre which will help support development of new events.

Teaching & Learning Centre

The Teaching and Learning Centre, developed jointly by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and The University of Glasgow, is an investment of £27 million to provide a training environment for the clinical years of the undergraduate medical degree (MBChB), postgraduate training facilities for medical staff and a large variety of NHS professionals and will ensure that we can train the next generation of doctors, scientists, clinical academics and support staff. Three floors of this purpose built centre will be dedicated to teaching and learning and will ensure the highest levels of support and development available for staff and students. The Centre will include an Innovation facility, supported by funding from the Scottish Funding Council and Glasgow City Council, which will accommodate the Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre and incubator units for industry.
The £20m Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre will use modern whole genome DNA sequencing to select the best treatments for patients with chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular and inflammatory conditions.

The new centre will replace facilities at the Western Infirmary, Victoria Infirmary, Southern General and the RoyalHospital for Sick Children which will all close following the transfer of clinical services to the new site.
The Stratified Medicine Scotland Innovation Centre (SMS-IC) is part of the vision for Scotland to be a world class centre of research, innovation and commercialisation in stratified medicine – bringing together excellence in the academic, industrial and NHS communities to create an infrastructure that will act as a springboard to allow Glasgow to be at the forefront of the field.

The department is supported by a wound care specialist nurse and a community specialist ulcer nurse offering support to district nurses. There is a vascular lab offering arterial and venous duplex imaging and treadmill testing. Currently we have 6 middle grade staff from the West of Scotland ST training rotation in General Surgery and the new Scottish vascular surgery trainees providing a 1 in 6 middle grade vascular surgery on call rota. Additionally we have a senior clinical fellow supporting the rotating trainees. We are supported by 8 consultant interventional radiologists who provide a 24 hour on call service.

5RESEARCH, AUDIT & SUBSPECIALTY TRAINING

OPPORTUNITIES

As well as teaching junior medical staff of all levels, there is a program of undergraduate teaching of medical students from the University of Glasgow. We offer bedside teaching and special study modules for research projects. We have a good track record for student projects being presented at local and national meetings. Within the vascular unit there is a strong commitment to academic research and on-going collaborative projects with the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Strathclyde. There is also collaboration with the University of Glasgow and the GlasgowCaledonianUniversity.
