IMG OBSERVERSHIP – LOGBOOK

Purpose of the logbook

The purpose of the logbook is to be used by IMG’s undergoing or participating in an observership with a registered General Practitioner Supervisor.

Level of Competency

The IMG when participating in the observership should mark each recorded entry as either;

“A” Assisted supervisor

“C” Conducted under supervision

“O” Observed

The logbook requires a minimum of 50 cases to be observed and recorded, however, it is up to the supervisor and the IMG to continue recording more cases should further learning be required.

Observation and preparing for a PESCI

Applicants are encouraged to attend an Observership to prepare for the PESCI.During the Observership, identify patient presentations and examples of good practice, record them and identify areas for further reading/study. The log becomes a guide for study. Reflection on the recorded cases should include the structure of a general practice consultation and the domains of general practice.Become familiar with the five domains of general practice

The PESCI questions are based on the five domains of general practice;

(i)Communication skills and the doctor-patient relationship

(ii)Applied professional knowledge and skills

(iii)Population health in general practice

(iv)Ethics and professional responsibilities

(v)Organisational and legal dimensions.

General practice consultations in Australia follow a structure (see below) and some or all of these areas will be relevant to the scenarios used in a PESCI interview;
