SHEET CARPETING
PART - GENERAL
SUMMARY
Section Includes:
Provide broadloom carpet where indicated on Drawings.
Provide carpet base without pad, where indicated on Drawings.
Provide separate carpet pad where specified in this Section.
Provide accessory materials, including adhesive, edging, reducers, floor underlayment, floor primer, seam sealer, and other required work necessary for a complete carpet installation.
Provide an adhesive approved by flooring manufacturer or a moisture mitigation systems approved by flooring manufacturer that will allow for flooring system to proceed under existing site conditions, including moisture content and pH of concrete slab to receive flooring and will allow manufacturer to warrant flooring installation.
SUBMITTALS
Manufacturer’s Data: (2)copies of carpet manufacturer’s specifications and installation instructions for carpet and related items specified.
Fiber Verification: Certification from fiber producer verifying use of premium branded, Type6.6, fiber in submitted carpet product. Premium branded fibers are identified as Antron Lumena or Legacy.
Samples: Provide samples of carpeting as required by Architect for color selection and approval.
Carpet Maintenance Kit: Contractor shall furnish to Owner one spot and stain removal kit which meets carpet manufacturer’s recommendations.
Manuals: Provide (6)copies of carpet manufacturer’s maintenance manual which shall include instructions for cleaning, spot and stain removal, and repairs.
Seaming Diagrams: Prior to start of carpet installation, submit to Architect for approval, a seaming diagram for areas to receive carpet, in accordance with requirements of this Section. Contractor shall follow approved seaming diagram.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Manufacturer Qualifications:
Carpet manufacturer shall have no less than 15 years of production experience with carpet similar to type specified. Published product literature of carpet manufacturer must clearly indicate compliance of products with requirements of this Section.
Installer Qualifications:
Installer must be directly responsible for quality of completed floor covering installation, including both quality of materials and labor used in installation. Installer must directly warrant to Owner that all products, materials, and services related to floor covering installation (including any floor covering(s), adhesive(s) and/or other products or materials used in installation) will meet specifications set forth herein. Product warranty required herein must be provided directly by carpet manufacturer.
Installer must have successful carpet installation experience similar to the work of this Section and be recommended, trained, and approved by carpet manufacturer.
Use skilled installers who are trained and experienced in necessary crafts and are familiar with methods needed for proper preparation of substrate and installation of carpet flooring and related accessory products.
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
Off-Site Preparation of Carpet: At an offsite location, remove carpet from manufacturer’s packaging, unroll, and allow to breathe for not less than 24 hours before rerolling and delivering to site.
Packing and Shipping: Deliver carpet to site or designated workroom clearly marked as to size, dye lot, and materials. Keep a written record of goods received at site and furnish on request to Architect or Owner.
Storage and Protection: Store delivered materials in an enclosed, dry area protected from damage and soiling.
SITE CONDITIONS
Building Condition:
Work of other construction trades shall be completed in areas to be carpeted, except for work which is contingent on carpet being installed.
Permanent heating and air conditioning systems for carpet installation area in building shall be in working order before start of carpet installation.
Environmental Requirements:

In areas to be carpeted provide a temperature of not less than 68degreesF and a relative humidity of 35 to 65percent for 48hours before installing carpet. Maintain these environmental requirements continuous during installation and for not less than 48hours following installation.
Use building heating or air conditioning system to meet environmental requirements. Do not use space heaters as a substitute heat source.
Maintain a temperature of not less than 50degreesF after 48 hours following installation of carpet.
Material Conditioning: Store carpet and adhesive in or near room being carpeted for not less than 48 hours before start of installation, with room temperature at not less than 68degreesF.
Field Measurements:
Dimensions noted in Contract Documents are approximate.
Verify dimensions and conditions affecting carpet installation in field prior to commencing installation.
WARRANTY
Installation Warranty: Contractor shall provide a 12month unconditional warranty against workmanship covering further repair of seams, joints, edges, puckering, and staining of carpet from adhesive due to excess moisture which may appear, and any other defects that might be directly pointed to defect in workmanship.

Submit to Architect a certificate from carpet manufacturer to Owner stating that if carpet is properly installed and maintained, and surface pile in a given area wears more than 10percent by weight within 5years from date of Substantial Completion, carpet in worn area shall be replaced at carpet manufacturer’s expense.
Replacement costs borne by carpet manufacturer shall include labor and materials required to remove carpet and provide new carpet.
Warranty shall not include tears, burns, pulls, cuts or damage due to use of improper cleaning agents or methods of using them.
Manufacturer’s Warranty: 25 years.

Manufacturer’s standard limited warranty against excessive surface wear, edge ravel, zippering, resiliency loss of backing, and delamination of secondary backing from primary backing containing face fiber for a nonprorated period.
Replacement costs borne by carpet manufacturer shall include labor and materials required to remove carpet and provide new carpet.
Warranty shall not include tears, burns, pulls, cuts or damage due to use of improper cleaning agents or methods of using them.
MAINTENANCE
Extra Materials (Maintenance Materials): At completion of installation, furnish to Owner all remnants, mill ends, cuttings, and scraps in excess of 1square yard for each type and color of carpet as maintenance materials attic stock for future repair and replacement. Wrap and clearly label material for storage. Place in an orderly manner in an area within building designated by Owner.
Extra Material: In addition, provide 10lineal yards of carpet from same dye lot as carpet installed. Wrap and clearly label carpet for storage and place in an orderly manner in an area within building designated by Owner.
PART - PRODUCTS
CARPET ALLOWANCE
General Requirements:
Owner and Architect will select carpet after award of Contract.
Provide a cash allowance for carpet of $______per square yard.
Carpet allowance amount shall include carpet base with beaded top edge.
Allowance amount shall include delivery of carpet to site, unloading at site, and applicable sales tax.
After award of Contract, notify Architect of quantity of carpet Contractor has estimated will be required for this Project and has been included in submitted Bid.
Architect reserves the right to question Contractor’s estimated quantity of carpet if it seems unreasonable.
If price of carpet selected is more or less than the specified allowance amount, a Change Order shall be issued adjusting Contract Sum directly for either a credit or an extra in accordance with quantity of carpet in Contractor’s estimate submitted with the Contractor’s Bid.

CARPET PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
Static Resistance: Static buildup shall remain under the 3,500kilovolt sensitivity level when tested in accordance with AATCC Test Method134.
Flammability:
Federal Standard DOC FF 170 (Pill Test)
Flame Spread Rating: 75 or less when tested by Steiner Tunnel Test, ASTM E84.
Flooring Radiant Panel Test: Carpet shall meet National Bureau of Standards NBSIR75950, NFPA253, and ASTME648: Class I - CFR minimum 0.45 watts per square cm.
Smoke Density: In accordance with NBS Smoke Density Chamber NFPA258 requirement of 450 or less.

Description: Hammered aluminum, plain or gold anodized as selected by Architect, of size and shape proper for its location. Edging shall be heavy duty gauge.
Resilient Accessories For Carpet:
Moulding Between Carpet and Concrete or Other Monolithic Hard Surface Floor: One piece vinyl, plus or minus 11/4inch wide exposed surface, reduces from carpet thickness to 0 inch. Undercut to receive 1/4inch thick carpet.
Acceptable Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements of the Contract Documents, acceptable manufacturers are as follows or Owner approved equal:

PART - EXECUTION
PREPARATION
Correcting Concrete Floor Deficiencies:
Fill faults with latex based floor patching compound (leveling compound), including cracks, joints, holes, and indents over 1/16inch in size.
Fill faults in existing substrate floor areas as indicated on Drawings.
Seal patches.
Remove bumps and ridges by grinding or other required means to provide a flat surface.
Cleaning Substrate Floor as Preparation For Carpet Installation:

Remove lumps of paint and drywall joint compound.
Remove wax, grease, paints, oils, and other substances which would cause adherence problems for adhesive.
Remove adhesives from concrete floor slab substrate after removal of existing flooring material(s) if adhesive is not compatible with adhesive to be used to install new carpet or if it will not otherwise provide a secure bond of the new carpet.
Removal of adhesives used to install vinyl asbestos tile (VAT), which will be removed to allow for construction work under this Contract shall be included with (VAT) removal work which is NotInContract as specified under Section 011100.
Clean areas where oil, wax, grease or other problem substances occur using caustic soda or other commercial cleaners as recommended by adhesive manufacturer.
Sweep, vacuum, and damp mop floors before applying adhesive.
Moisture Testing Concrete Substrates: Prepare in accordance with ASTMF710.
Verify that substrates are dry and free of curing compounds, sealers, and hardeners.
Alkalinity and Adhesion Testing: Perform tests recommended by manufacturer. Proceed with installation only after substrates pass testing.
Moisture Testing:
Perform anhydrous calcium chloride test, (ASTMF1869) and/or relative humidity test (ASTM F2170).
Perform tests recommended by manufacturer. Proceed with installation only after substrates pass testing.
Checking Concrete Floor For Porosity:
Check porosity by pouring a few drops of water on concrete and watch how water absorbs into concrete, or test an area with the adhesive and carpet to determine the open time and bond.
If floor is porous, damp mop with a solution of (1)tablespoon of ammonia to (1)gallon of water before applying adhesive or, if required, provide a primer as recommended by the carpet manufacturer to provide a suitable surface to receive carpet adhesive.
Contractor's Acceptance of Subfloor:
Installation of carpet shall indicate Contractor’s acceptance of subfloor.

Contractor shall assume responsibility for unacceptable conditions or finish caused by subfloor conditions.
Off-Site Preparation of Carpet: Refer to Delivery, Storage, and Handling Article of this Section.
On-Site Preparation of Carpet: Unroll carpet face up and cut lengths required not less than 24hours before installation.
Base Installation: Resilient base related to carpet flooring, specified under Section 096500, shall be installed before start of carpet installation.
GENERAL CARPET INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS
Carpet Seaming:
Length Seams:
Indicate location of intended length seams on seaming diagram.
Install carpet in same direction, unless otherwise specified, indicated on Drawings, or approved by Architect.
Cross Seams:
Indicate cross seams necessary due to layout of areas.
Hold cross seams to a minimum.
Do not place cross seams in conspicuous locations, at pivot points, or other locations where specified.
Seams at Doors or Similar Wall Openings:
Install seams occurring at and parallel to door opening widths directly under center of door thickness when door is in closed position.
