Abstract

The abstract is to be in fully-justified italicized text, at the top of the left-hand column as it is here. The Abstract should be a 3-7 sentence overview which alludes to the final results. This template demonstrates how to format a paper submission for the Space Research Symposium and provides organizational suggestions. The content of you paper should replace the text of this template. Take care to preserve fonts, headings and spacing.

1. Introduction

Provide a more detailed introduction of the topic and major premise of the paper in the Introduction. COSGC Symposium papers are not required to follow this template and style. However by following this template, all required Symposium formatting and style requirements will be fulfilled. Additionally, this style is similar to the submission requirements for other technical paper forums and will help to insurea professional looking submission.

2. Main text

The main text will be in 10-point Times, single-spaced. Do not use double-spacing. Be sure text is fully justified—that is, flush left and flush right. Please do not place any additional blank lines between paragraphs.

The paper should be logically divided into sections using the convention in this template. The main text may have multiple sections covering the necessary material.

Be sure to include a Conclusions section summarizing the findings and/or recommendations. For instance a paper may include sections 3, 4, and 5 which contain the design/findings and section 6 would be the Conclusions.

2.1. Second-order headings

As in this heading, they should be Times 12-point boldface, initially capitalized, flush left, with one blank line before, and one after. There should be one space before and one space after each heading. There should be two spaces before the next major section, (i.e. between section 2 and 3). Try to keep headings with at least some text of that section. In other words don’t leave a heading on a previous column and all of the text on the next column if possible.

3. Figure and Table Captions

The following sections of this guide, 3, 4 and 5 provide more formatting suggestions dealing with figures, tables, footnotes and references. The paper should credit any outside help and information cited in the paper.

Figure and table captions should be 10-point boldface. Initially capitalize only the first word of each figure caption and table title. Figures and tables must be numbered separately. For example: “Figure 1. Database contexts”, “Table 1. Input data”. Figure captions are to be below the figures. Table titles are to be centered above the tables. See, Figure 1. The NASA Logo, as an example.

4. Footnotes

Use footnotes sparingly (or not at all!) and place them at the bottom of the column on the page on which they are referenced. Use Times 8-point type, single-spaced. Avoid using footnotes altogether and include necessary peripheral observations in the text (within parentheses, if preferred, as in this sentence).

5. References

List and number all bibliographical references in Times, single-spaced, at the end of the paper. When referenced in the text, enclose the citation number in square brackets, for example [1]. Where appropriate, include the name(s) of editors of referenced books.
