Professional development with ICT

About this course

The course should enable you to:

· develop your skills in investigating teaching and learning in your classroom;

· understand the nature of professional and school development;

· develop your action planning to suit your professional and personl needs;

· analyse change in your institution with an awareness of the issues involved.

The first aim relates to the Part 1 of this course ‘Investigating teaching and learning with ICT; the second and third aims relate to Part 2 (Study Guide Block 2) ‘Personal and professional development; and fourth aim relates to Part 3 (Study Guide Block 3) ‘Professional and school development’.

You will see, from their titles, the interrelationship between the three parts. This is one of the main themes of the course, namely that personal development and professional development are strongly linked to the development of the school, and that all should be based on evidence gleaned from teaching and learning in the classroom.

Where is this from?

This course was originally part of the MA Programme in Education but could also be studied on its own. The last presentation of this course was February 2004. The course aimed to develop a teacher’s understanding of issues fundamental to the analysis of change in the school. Both professional and school development were considered, linking teaching using ICT (information and communication technology) to theoretical concepts. Methods such as ‘evidence-based’ practice and crticial evaluation were explored in relation to personal and school priorities.

The course also draws on subject material also available on the OpenLearn LabSpace area under LSP_1: Learning Schools Programme.

It was originally recommended that a teacher complete E850 Teaching and Learning with ICT (also available within OpenLearn Labspace) before studying E851 as the action plan and notes completed in E850 are developed in this course

The resources provided were primarily focussed on two areas:

· how ICT can improve, extend and transofrm teaching and learning;

· how ICT can enhance and make more efficient your work as a professional.
