Punic Wars Newspaper
The Punic Wars were major events in the history of Ancient Rome. As a group you will explain what happened, the major actors, the major events, and outcomes of these wars. Furthermore, you will make arguments for and against the burning of Carthage. This will be done in the format of a newspaper. There will be groups of 3 people. All people in the group will earn the same grade. Work together on each part and check each other’s work. This will build your communication skills and ability to work as a team.
Part 1 – News article explaining the events of the 1st Punic War. Explain the events, major people, major battles, tactics, and outcome.

Part 3 - News article explaining the events of the 3rd Punic War. Explain the events, major people, major battles, tactics, and outcome.
Part 4 – Feature story on Hannibal – leader of Carthage. Explain who he was and why he was important – explain some of his major decisions.
Part 5 – Editorial – write an opinion piece that is in favor of Rome’s actions against Carthage in the 3rd Punic war. Why was this the right move?
Part 6 – Editorial – write an opinion piece that is against Rome’s actions against Carthage in the 3rd Punic war. Why was this an example of a genocide? Look up the definition of genocide to help you.
Some things to consider
1. Task one - As a group you must decide what two sections each member will complete
2. Task two – will the newspaper be a Roman or Carthaginian newspaper?
3. All work must be typed
4. Each article must have a headline
5. No works cited needed, no in text citations needed, but historical support is very important
6. You will have time in class to work with your group. Do not only work on your portion – proofread and check each group member’s work. The goal is to work as a team to produce the best possible newspaper product.
7. Pictures are encouraged – they are generally part of a newspaper
8. You may refer to the newspapers I have in class as an example of the following
- A biography, interest piece, or obituary – (this may help with section 4)
- Opinion sections (op-eds) which may help with sections 5 and 6
9. At the end of the project you will fill out a group evaluation form. This will help me to understand how each group member contributed.
10. The newspaper is due______. That means it must be stapled with each group members name on it before the bell for class rings. Emails will not be accepted.
11. Additional research will be needed. There are many books in the library as well as a research guide made by Mrs. Rich that will be posted on my website.
