The Privatisation Unit has won a Golden Award for its professionalism, competence and good leadership in steering Uganda's economic reform programme for the last several years.

According to the World Bank country manager Grace Yabrudy, the Privatisation Unit (PU) has continued to "push forward the unfinished economic reform agenda envisaged by the bank."

It provided quality advice to the World Bank-supported government programmes under the Ministry of Finance, she said.

She was speaking at a get-together for managers from all World Bank-supported projects, on Saturday. Awards were given to various organisations for excellent performance.

"We feel greatly honoured for having been recognised at last. It attests to our hard work and commitment in bringing the best economic reform to Uganda's utilities and services sector," Jim Mugunga, PU's Communications Officer said.

The World Bank finances PU's activities that focus on: achieving a higher level of private investments, efficiency of commercial and utility service and better access to public services. It's the first time that the World Bank Uganda country office is giving accolades to best performers in its programmes. The awards are to be annual.

Ms Yabrudy said the awards are "a great opportunity to recognise and appreciate the great efforts and contributions made by the technical colleagues in government for the achievement of lasting development results."

Issues that were considered in selecting the best performers included "team leadership, pro-activity and timeliness in identifying and dealing with project implementation."

The Second Economic and Financial Management Project which is in charge of developing a new transparent system for planning and budgeting to be used by all government departments, was given the Silver Award.

If usefully implemented, the system is partly expected to plug loopholes exploited by bureaucrats to embezzle public funds and consequently lead to the effectiveness of public expenditure and better public services.

A third prize, which recognises efforts to create sustainable conditions for strong private sector enterprise and growth was given to the Second Private Sector Competitiveness Project Team.

It was hailed for enabling Ugandan enterprises to compete, explore ways of reducing the cost of doing business and creating an infrastructure and finance platform for the transformation of Ugandan enterprises.
