Course Description:
The Pre AP Studio class is for the serious art student who has the self-discipline required to design and complete self-generated projects, which are finished according to a schedule. This course is the pre-requisite for advanced classes such as AP Drawing and AP 2D or 3D Design.
Art emphasis will be placed on understanding the importance and learning how to recognize and use elements & design principles, a variety of 2-D and 3-D media and techniques, art history, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.
Pre AP students will be encouraged to work independently investigating, researching, exploring ideas to promote their own personal expression at a more rigorous pace. Students will be introduced to the concept of a concentration, develop an awareness of quality in art making, and begin to engage in various levels of art theory.
GOALS FOR CLASS:
Instructional Goals:
· Maintain a sketchbook or altered book to research, problem solve, take notes, and develop ideas.
· Students will develop a “mini’ portfolio similar to the AP portfolio requirements to prepare them for a future AP course that will include:.
· CONTOUR: FIGURE OR STILL LIFE (3-D Permissible; From Direct Observation)
· PORTRAIT (3-D Permissible; From Direct Observation)
· PERSPECTIVE (Interior or Exterior View; From Direct Observation)
· VALUE (Still Life; From Direct Observation)
· All students will participate in group critiques.
· Art History: Describe, analyze, interpret and judge a variety of art organized by time periods and styles.
· Students will be required to participate in an open discussion about a variety of artwork and take brief notes.
· Pre-AP Art I students will be preparing for VASE (Visual Arts Scholastic Event) competition in the spring.
· Learning to pace oneself, keep up with deadlines, and maintain quality work will be necessary.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
· Spiral bound sketchbook 60 pages or more. You can find this at Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, Big Lot’s, Ross, or M.J. Michael’s.
· Drawing Pencils
· Personal set of Prismacolor Colored Pencils (12 color set is acceptable)
· 2 to 5 Sharpie Fine Point Markers
· Ruler
· Erasers
· Flash Drive
Classroom Code of Conduct: I Will:
· Do nothing to prevent the teacher from teaching anyone, myself included;

Classroom Rules & Expectations:
· Follow directions.
· Be on time, in your seats, and ready to work when the tardy bell rings.
· Bring supplies (sketchbook, pencil, and erasers) to class everyday.
· Take responsibility for yourself and your actions.
· Respect this classroom and the people in it.
· The instructor releases the class, NOT THE BELL. Stay seated until teacher dismisses the class.
· You are expected to clean up your area and take care of classroom supplies.
· ONLY BOTTLED WATER will be allowed in class. No food or other drinks will be allowed in the art room UNLESS YOU HAVE A DOCTORS NOTE.
SHS CAMPUS DISCIPLINE MANAGEMENT PLAN:

Serious Infractions, such as fighting or threatening a teacher, will Result in Immediate referral to the Assistant Principal Office!
CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
SHS POLICY STATES THAT NO CELLS PHONES OR OTHER ELECTRONICS WILL BE OUT IN THE CLASSROOM.
---CELL PHONE and Ipod USE IN MY ART CLASS IS PROHIBITTED, UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED BY INSTRUCTOR.
Consequences/Cell Phones and Other /Electronic Devices
· 1st offense - You will receive a warning and be asked to put device away.
· 2nd offense – Teacher with hold device until the end of class and you will receive a violation.
· 3rd offense – Device will be taken to the AP’s office and you will receive a violation.
4th offense - Device will be taken to the AP’s office, you will receive a violation and a referral.
ANYONE WHO REFUSES TO COMPLY WITH THE TEACHERS REQUEST OF SURRENDERING THEIR PHONE OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE WILL RECEIVE A PHONE CALL HOME AND AN AUTOMATIC REFERAL.
Grading Policy:
My grading system is very simple. If you do your work, turn it in on time, and meet the objectives with quality work, you will get a good grade.
Poor craftsmanship, lack of creativity, originality, and unfinished work will be reflected in your grade!
Incomplete work will not be accepted.
Due dates are NOT OPTIONAL. Students must complete their work on time. 1 day late will result in a grade no higher than a 70 and more than 2 a 50 or below.
Be prepared to have homework!
Due dates will be clearly posted and additional studio time will be available as
needed after school. Following each assignment, students will participate in a group critique. Student participation during critiques will be graded.
GRADE DESIGNATION GUIDE
6 (98 to 100): Excellent work. Shows evidence of original thinking, demonstrates verve, addresses complex visual or conceptual ideas, uses materials well, technique is excellent, evidence of experimentation or risk-taking
5 (97 to 93) Strong work. Work at this level is strong, although there may be inconsistencies. Shows evidence that it is about something. Is fairly confident. Has a grasp of the elements of art and principles of design.
4 (92 to 85) Good work. Work at this level shows some sense of direction, but may not be fully resolved. Exhibits some degree of success. Shows some manipulation of ideas. Shows a good understanding of the elements and principles of design. Technical aspects are handled well but do not always match the idea.
3 (84 to 78) Moderate work. Work at this level shows a sense of real effort but problems are not successfully resolved.
May be more accomplished technically than conceptually. Demonstrates an emerging awareness of the elements of art/principles of design. Erratic in technique
2 (76 to 73) Weak work. Work at this level is weak or awkward. It is simplistic in addressing solutions to problems. Shows no clear intent. Limited artistic decision-making
1 (72 and below) Poor work. Work at this level show little if any evidence of thinking, is poor in technique, is trite in addressing solutions to problems, has poor composition, poor grasp of elements of art /principles of design.
Makeup Work Policy:
Students are required to turn in all assignments when they are due. In the case of excused absences students will be given 5 days from the day they return to class to make up work. If the work is not turned in within the 5-day grace period a zero will be given as a grade.
Truancies/unexcused absences
In the event that your student has an unexcused absence or is found to be truant from class, no grade higher than a 50% will be given for any work turned in for that day. If no effort is made to complete any missing work in a 24 hr period, the student will receive a 0 for the daily grade they may have missed.
Late work
Late work will not be accepted. (Exceptions may be made if parents or counselors have contacted the instructor prior to incident)
Additional extra credit assignments/points may be given at the instructor’s discretion.
