PATHWAY 1 - Recreation Therapists who held valid membership in BCTRA as of March 31, 2012 are recognized as Professional Members. Due to changes in the membership criteria and in order to maintain professional standing these members must keep their membership current by payment of membership dues by April 1 of each membership year.

PATHWAY 2 – Degree in TR:A baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in therapeutic recreation or a major in recreation or leisure with an option in therapeutic recreation.

PATHWAY 3 - Degree in Recreation:A baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university in recreation administration or recreation and leisure studies and the following:

A minimum of six (6) 3 credit courses or equivalent of therapeutic recreation and general recreation content coursework. A minimum of four (4) 3 credit courses in therapeutic recreation is required; and Supportive courses to include a total of six (6) 3 credit courses with minimum of: (i) 3 credits in the content area of anatomy and physiology; (ii) 3 credits in the content area of abnormal psychology; and (iii) 3 credits in the content area of human growth and development across the lifespan. The remaining semester hours or quarter hours of coursework must be fulfilled in the content area of ‘human services’ as defined by NCTRC.

PATHWAY 4 – Active CTRS: A baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university with experience as recognized by NCTRC. Must show proof of active CTRS credential.

** NCTRC has a stream that will accept an allied health degree, TR coursework along with work experience. For those applicants that do not hold a degree in TR or recreation studies it is recommended you pursue this pathway and write your CTRS exam**

BCTRA will only accept a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university as officially written on the academic transcript.

Only the following officially designated majors appearing on the transcript will be accepted for Pathway 2 (a) therapeutic recreation (recreation therapy); (b) recreation or leisure with an option in therapeutic recreation; and (c) therapeutic recreation, recreation, or leisure in combination with other fields of study (e.g., Therapeutic Recreation and Health Studies; Recreation and Sport Management; Leisure and Tourism).d) Community Rehabilitation, Human Kinetics, and Kinesiology in combination with a 2 year diploma in Therapeutic Recreation who graduated prior to October 2012.

Accredited: Refers to a college or university, which is accredited by a regional accrediting agency.
