VERY IMPORTANT

On Sunday 21st August. The annual Stanford le Hope Community 5K off road will take place at Thameside Thurrock Nature Park. We need lots of entries and also help in marshalling etc. so please keep this date in mind and let me know if you can help.

This year’s charity

The committee have decided to give the club’s share of the money from the Summer Series and the Stanford le Hope 5K this year to Basildon ‘MIND’. If you wish to make an extra donation please see any of the committee members.

A warm welcome to new members Georgina Robb, Gary Rowlatt and John Stamford

AGM/BBQ

As all the reports and last year’s minutes had been sent out prior to the meeting the AGM was kept down to 5 minutes!!! The garden and the smell of sausages and burgers cooking welcomed members and guests to a very pleasant and convivial evening. We were very lucky with the weather, and the garden was in full bloom, we are so lucky to have this facility for our BBQ. Many thanks to the cooks, those who brought the many and varied puddings and those who helped to clear up afterwards.

** Chris Footer wrote:-This adventure started as all my recent adventures have started, with an email from my friend Gary. At the end of last year I received an email from Gary about a race in North Wales called The Pig Ultra Duathlon organised by Brutal Events. The race consisted of a 6 mile run up and down Cadair Idris, a 110 mile road bike then a 20 mile trail run, thankfully they also offered a half distance race called the Little Pig which was only a 55 mile bike and 10 mile trail run and this was the option we both went for.

So we then find ourselves standing in a welsh farmer’s field at 6.45am with 100 other nutters on a cold and wet Sunday morning waiting to start the slog up Cadair Idris.

The run up Cadair Idris was a tough one and due to low cloud cover we only went 2.5 miles up so the initial run was a mile short at 5 miles once back to transition. The 55 mile bike ride was my longest and certainly toughest ride I’ve done so far and at one point I was walking quicker than I could pedal up hill.

Finished the bike and after being talked into going out onto the trail run course by Gary as I was feeling a tad tired, I set off for a tough 10 mile slog round the trail run course.

In all the race took me 9 hours 59 mins to complete and I came across the line last for the first time in my racing history, but I was in it for completing rather than racing.

Gary completed it in 6hrs 12min with the winning guy finishing in 4hr 49 mins. The lead guy for the full distance race finished in 9hrs 46 mins.

As much as it was very ‘brutal’ I enjoyed the event a lot and may just maybe go back sometime for another go.

**Saturday/Sunday 18th/19th June Hadrian’s Wall, see attached detailed write up by Nick; I know she’s my daughter but it’s certainly worth a read.

Club Kit

With so many members taking part in races these days it would be lovely to see even more club vests/T-shirts worn. Spectators can easily recognise you from a distance and you get much more support from marshals etc. We also have hi-viz T-shirt particularly suitable for the dark winter evenings, but let’s not think about that!!! These cannot be worn if you are representing the club.Contact Sue 07909 778695 or
