Course Description:
This course is designed to help students improve critical thinking and writing skills through various in-class activities and writing homework on assigned readings. The primary focus of the class lies on speaking and writing which students will have as many chances as possible to practice. They will be given an opportunity to share their deep thoughts and express opinions while engaged in meaningful interactions with classmates. The course eventually aims to encourage students to connect to the world of books and therefore to build a personal habit of reading for fun.
Preparation:
Students are expected to come to class on time with the assigned book, a file/holder and pencils/pens. They must have read all the assigned readings before class and be ready to actively participate in class discussion and other activities. Come to class fully prepared with positive attitude and open mind!
Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated based on various in-class activities, take-home assignments and class participation.
In-class activities:
1. Open-Book Quizzes
In the beginning of every class except for the first class of the term, students will be given a very shortopen-book quiz where they will be answering short-answer/multiple choice questions about the assigned reading.
2. Discussion
In class, we will have a couple of general discussion sessions for assigned reading. Students are required to read the book thoroughly, ponder on some issues presented in the text, and be ready to present their opinions during class discussion.
3. Others:
Students are required to actively participate in class activities.
Take-home Assignments:
1. Reading
Students are required to read the assigned book BEFORE class and think about some issues to have a discussion in class.
2. Writing
Students are required to write one essay in class and two journals for homework (with one of them being a summary writing)on books we read for the term. Further announcements will be made later in class.
