  1. Position Description

Overview

4-H STEM Youth Ambassadors are an asset in accomplishing the goals and outcomes of the 4-H Science Mission Mandate. Through a competitive application process, six 4-H STEM Youth Ambassadors will be selected in January 2016 to serve a two-year term as leaders making contributions to solve local challenges, speaking publically about their 4-H STEM Futures program involvement and advising National 4-H Council and 4-H National Headquarters on national priorities. 4-H STEM Youth Ambassadors will receive a $1,000 scholarship at the end of their term in recognition of their service. Applications are limited to those states with a Lockheed Martin Sub-grant, which include: AL, AR, CA, CO, FL, GA, KY, MD, NJ, NY, PA, TX, and WA

Time Commitment:

  • Four hours per month; plus
  • Participate in and help facilitate the Lockheed Martin/4-H partnership training at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, MD and represent 4-H at the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington, DC from April 14-17, 2016 (all expenses paid by National 4-H Council).
  • Participate in monthly conference calls/webinars with National 4-H Council staff.

Length of Term:Two years

Age of applicants: 16-19

Responsibilities of the 4-H STEM Youth Ambassadors

  • Liaise between the state and national STEM teams
  • Advise National 4-H Council and Lockheed Martin on program and promotional tactics for sparking youth interest in STEM, particularly for reaching minority youth and girls.
  • Provide specific insight about strategies to help youth persist in all stages of the 4-H Career Readiness Pathway.
  • Actively pursue state/local partnerships and networks to expand 4-H STEM Futures programmatic efforts and learning experiences.
  • Provide a youth voice to share in donor outreach
  • Advise and support the resource development team at National 4-H Council as they build donor relationships and see funding.
  • Provide a youth voice in state, regional and national promotions of STEM initiatives
  • Represent 4-H in a positive light and serve as a youth voice for 4-H Science and the 4-H STEM Futures programs.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for 4-H Science and 4-H STEM Futures programs for local media interviews and other opportunities, as needed.
  • Share experience as a 4-H STEM Youth Ambassador through social channels throughout the year when participating in events nationally and locally.
  • Inform 4-H youth, 4-H volunteers, 4-H educators, University faculty and other interested persons about 4-H STEM Futures opportunities and resources.
  • Connect with donors on local level to develop and implement STEM strategies
  • Engage with the Lockheed Martin employee mentors/volunteers within your state and local area.

Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience in the 4-H program at the State and/or National level
  • An interest in sharing knowledge to enhance youth educational experiences
  • Excellent social media and communication skills
  • Ability to work with county/local/community and state level professionals to share resources and opportunities
  • The ability to communicate effectively with 4-H STEM leaders, volunteers, and funders
  • A willingness to promote the 4-H Science Mission Mandate and STEM Futures program
