CLASSROOM:

  1. Describe the difference between pipe and tubing.
  2. Explain the difference between low, medium, and high-pressure piping systems.
  3. List the different weld passes and explain the purposes of each one.
  4. Discuss the differences in technique in uphill and downhill welding.
  5. Explain how to make an open root weld.
  6. Describe how to use a hot pass to clean a weld.
  7. Identify the types and parts of weld grooves, along with parts of the groove weld.
  8. Identify weld defects associated with pipe welding.
  9. Explain heat input and distribution.
  10. Describe the preparation of the pipe joint before welding.
  11. Explain the effects of distortion and how to control it during welding.
  12. Identify safety hazards while welding.
  13. Describe pipe welding and the pipe welding industry.
  14. Describe pipe welding codes/standards and inspection testing methods.

LAB:

  2. 5G pipe weld, 6010 root, 7018 fill and cap up-hill method.
  3. 6G pipe weld, 6010 root, 7018 fill and cap up-hill method.
  4. 5G pipe weld, 6010 root, hotpass, fill, and cap down-hill method.
  5. Demonstrate skill in welding pipe in all positions.
  6. Demonstrate an ability to weld according to a welding procedure specification sheet.
  7. Demonstrate process of fitting-up pipe joint prior to welding.

8. Demonstrate ability to cut pipe manually and automatically.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The student must pass the safety test with 100% before the student is allowed to work in the shop. The student will pass each weld assignment (to the Instructor's satisfaction) before moving on to the next assignment the student will follow safety rules at all times. The student will be observed (by the instructor) following safety rules and graded according to the following of these rules.

GRADING CRITERIA:

LAB ASSIGNMENTS 40%

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS 40%

SAFTY 20%

TOTAL 100%

REQUIRED TEXT:

WELDING PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES BY SACKS & BOHNART

ATTENDANCE:

After being tardy three times (for more than 5min.), this will count as one unexcused absence. If you are tardy more than 30 minutes this will count as a half a day unexcused, and if one and a half hours late or more this counts as an unexcused absence. Days missed with a doctors excuse will be excused as well as other absences with approval by the instructor (instructor will decide the legitimacy of the situation whether it will be excused or not) arranged prior to the absence. AFTER HAVING THREE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS.

DISABILITY STATEMENT:

I encourage any student needing to request accommodations for a specific disability to please meet with me at your earliest convenience to ensure timely and appropriate accommodations.
