“Road Trip”

  1. Pre Trip Bus
  2. Pick up 1st Student (w/c) -Driver will verbalize the process from activating eight ways to getting off bus. Driver will exit to open lift door. Monitor will be at the back of bus ready to receive student. Driver greets student and loads them on the bus. Monitor will receive student, greeting them, securing the w/c verbalizing what she is doing.Driver will close the lift door and proceed back into bus, walking to back to make sure the monitor does not need assistance and insure w/c is secure. Driver returns to seat and verbalizes leaving the stop.
  3. Pick up 2nd Student (walker) -Driver will verbalize the process from activating eight ways to opening the door. Driver greets student. Monitor walks to the front of the bus, standing at the pole, waiting to assist student if needed. Monitor may also greet student. Monitor says to student as she walks up the stairs, “Hold on to the hand rail”.Monitor assist student to her seat. Assist with buckleing up. (There are no seat belts so you will have to pretend.) Monitor says to driver, “We are ready to go!” Driver verbalizes the process of leaving the stop.
  4. Student Management – Monitor will sit toward the center of bus where she can focus on all students.
  5. Stop Sign – No Left Turn out of South Shop – Driver comes to a complete stop at the stop sign at the end of Sharon Elementary drive. (No Left Turns are allowed out of Sharon Elementary drive) Proceed down Old Atlanta (this is a school zone, be aware if lights are flashing.)
  6. Right Turn at Light - be alert at this intersection, very congested during school time.
  7. School Zone Continues – be cautious of students traveling and walking in this area. Point out cross walk and usual position of S.O.
  8. Stop Sign – point out coming to complete stop at all stop signs. Do not stop past the stop sign, stop at it. If you need a better view after stopping ease up so you can do so.
  9. Speed Limit – remind that speed limit with student on bus is 40mph, unless lower speed is posted. If students are not on board you may go speed limit posted, not to exceed 55mph on GA 400(without students).
  10. Keep Moving Lane – note that the Keep Moving sign. Obey the sign, but do it with caution, you do not know what others might be doing!
  11. Entering School Ground – 10 mph as entering school grounds, unless otherwise posted.
  12. Entering Bus Lane – 5mph when you approach bus lane and in bus lane.
  13. Student Drop Off at School - be cautious of the awning as you pull to curb. Stop giving the bus in front of you enough room to open their emergency door.Driver stands and faces students – “Nichelle it is time for you to get off at school.” Assist student in getting off the bus. Follows student off the bus to open lift door. Monitor is inside working with the w/c. Monitor moves student to lift, always talking with student. Driver put hand on w/c and lets student know they are going down.
  14. Leaving Bus Lane –Driver gets back on the bus. Point out that you would always wait until the bus in front of you proceeds before you do. Follow out. The only reason you would pass a bus in the bus lane would be if they were pulled down with flashers on.
  15. Evacuation – Driver secure bus, calls into base to let them know you have a 10-41, you are at 123 Red St and you need to evacuate your bus. Driver will place radio mic out window and stand to face the students. “Students we are going to need to evacuate the bus. Please follow Ms. Peggy off the bus. She is going to take you to a safe spot and I will be right behind you.” Monitor leads the students off the bus, reminding them to hold on to the handrail. Leads the students off the bus 100 ft away. (If there is another adult on the bus they should always lead the students off) Driver checks the bus and joins the group.
