STUDENT BODY ELECTIONS 2015-2016

The student body election process is now beginning. Elections fall into two major categories. Student-body officers are elected in a primary and subsequent run-off election. Shortly after that, class officers are elected. Student body offices are Activities Coordinator, Publicity Coordinator, Head Cheerleader, Intramural Commissioner, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-President, and Student Body President:

1. The President of the Student Body shall be the head of the Student and Executive Councils. He shall preside over all meetings of the Student Council. He shall head the school delegation to all Inter-School Councils. He shall only vote in Student Council in case of a tie. The President, with the approval of the other Executive officers, shall organize the two Executive Standing Committees as necessary and as specified in this student constitution, and with Student Council approval shall appoint any other necessary committees.

2. The Vice-President shall perform all the duties of the President in the event of the President's absence, and he shall coordinate all committees pertaining to Student-Body sponsored activities. He shall act as student parliamentarian in the absence of the Intramural Commissioner. He shall be chairman of the Executive Dance Committee. He shall be an executive officer.

3. The Secretary/Treasurer shall keep a written record of all official Student Council proceedings for which he shall be responsible to the Student Council and the President. He shall post the minutes of all Student Council sessions on the Student Council Bulletin Board and make the minutes available to be posted in Homerooms on a weekly basis. He shall prepare the meeting agendas. He shall be responsible for informing the Student Body of Student Council business. He shall be responsible to take attendance at all meetings. He shall keep written records of all financial matters of the Associated Students of Jesuit High School for which he is responsible to the Student Council and President. He shall give financial reports as directed by the President. He shall head any finance committee. He shall be an executive officer.

4. The Intramural Commissioner shall act as parliamentarian at all Student Council meetings. He shall take the place of the Vice-President during his absence. He is chairman of the Executive Intramural Committee. He shall be an executive officer.

5. The Head Cheerleader shall lead the cheering section at all athletic contests. He shall have the power to call and publicize rallies before varsity games. He may not hold any other office in the Student Council. He shall be an executive officer.

6. The Activities Coordinator shall chair a committee of student representatives from each club/activity. He shall actively recruit student involvement in clubs and activities. He shall, in concert with the Publicity Coordinator, ensure that all programs and activities are well-attended. He shall work with the Vice President to coordinate the dances. He shall help to coordinate Spirit Week and any other school-wide or inter-school activities. He shall be an executive officer.

7. The Publicity Coordinator shall serve as chair of the Galley Crew. He shall keep the student body informed of all activities through signs, posters, banners, and announcements. He, with the help of the Galley Crew, shall prepare and post pertinent materials each Monday to publicize the activities of the week. He shall serve as official PR person with other high schools to publicize school events. He shall be an executive officer.

Qualifications of Executive Officers:

1. All the candidates for executive offices must have compiled at least a 2.75 grade point average. They may not be on academic or disciplinary probation at the time of their election.

2. Candidates must have completed one semester at Jesuit.

3. Candidates for Executive Office must be seniors by August of their term of office.

4. Executive Officers must complete their community service requirements either in the summer before their senior year or during 7th or 8th period during the regular school year. Executive Officers must take the Leadership class during 3rd period.

...if you are tardy or miss the meeting, you cannot run for office.

Executive Council

General Information

General requirements for office:

1. Must meet class requirements.

2. Must not be on probation (academic or discipline).

3. Must have at least a 2.75 GPA.

5. Must not spend more than $30.00 on campaign.

6. Can not give out campaign gratuities.

7. Must be prepared to attend all open dances as dance committee member.

8. Must be prepared to attend functions outside Jesuit as a school representative.

9. Must be prepared to attend summer conferences, meetings, be a Big Brother at Frosh orientation.

10. Attend weekly meetings of the Student Council.

12. Assist cheerleaders after head cheerleaders have been elected.

13. Work with cheerleaders on Spirit Week, Homecoming, WSP, Food Drive and other school wide functions.

14. Be a member of Block J.

15. Assume other responsibilities that might occur during the school year that are not listed here.

Instructions for Election Assembly Speeches on March 25th.

 Speeches will be given during an Assembly on Wednesday, March 25th. It is a dress attire day.

 Each speech should be no more than 2 minutes long. Practice and time your speech.

 Speak slowly and loudly into the microphone.

 Give Mr. Hall a typed copy of your speech by the start of school on Tuesday, March 24th. Give it to him in person or have Mrs. Harrison in the Deans office place it in his mailbox.

 Jokes are ok, but do not use any profanity or derogatory humor directed towards others or yourself in your speech. Stick to the reasons why you should be elected, rather than false promises.

 Voting will take place online during a 24 hour period after the Assembly. If a runoff election is necessary (no candidate for an office gets 50% plus one vote), it will take place once the votes are counted and it is determined that a runoff election is necessary.

  No campaign information (posters, etc.) may be hung/ passed out, etc. until Monday, March 23rd after the lunchtime meeting.

ELECTIONS-CAMPAIGN RULES

l. You may not distribute gratuities to other students. Gratuities include but are not limited to t-shirts, food, parties, gifts.

2. All signs must be at least 8 l/2 by 11 inches in size.

3. No sign may be attached to the gutters of any building or draped from the roof.

4. No signs or hand outs are to be put in student lockers or affixed to cars in the parking lot.

5. All signs are to be attached with masking tape...not duct tape.

6. All signs are to be in good taste and consistent with the philosophy of Jesuit High School. No signs which explicitly or implicitly express racism or sexism will be allowed. Use of vulgar language or sexual innuendo will not be tolerated. If there is a question in your mind get permission before you put it up.

7. Decisions concerning the appropriateness of campaign materials and procedures will be the responsibility of the Director of Student Activities.

8. Defacing another's posters will not be tolerated.

9. All campaign slogans and signs must be positive and directed at the issues and not the person(s).

10. You will be required to clear your posters and clean up campaign materials by a deadline after the elections. This includes removing tape from buildings.

11. Failure to comply with the rules for campaigning will result in your disqualification as a candidate.
