Early Help Co-ordinator

JOB PURPOSE

To co-ordinate the work of a range of internal and external practitioners in supporting students and their families.

Principle accountabilities

To act as a designated safeguarding officer, accountable to the designated safeguarding lead; to provide an operational lead in child protection and safeguarding concerns.

To support students and their families to overcome social and personal problems which impede social and academic progress at school.

To initiate assessment, to plan and to co-ordinate the delivery of support for students at wave 3 and above the Continuum of Need.

To provide case management for students on Child Protection Plans, School Based Plans (SEMH) and children who are looked after.

To work with school staff to develop their skills to provide early intervention and promote emotional well-being and support students with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.

Key Responsibilities

To support students and their families to overcome social and personal problems which impede social and academic progress at school.

Key Tasks

  • Develop a co-ordinating role for students and their families to assist them to work with the school staff to develop solutions to family and community matters that influence a student’s capacity or ability to learn and thrive.
  • Establish a partnership with parents to provide information, counselling support and advice to enable them to manage their children effectively.
  • Work with students, as individuals or groups, to provide information, support and advice to enable them to manage their learning and behaviour and prepare for independent living, with a capacity for coping without the need for support involvement.
  • Use data to identify students who are underachieving or failing to thrive and work with colleagues to create and implement effective plans of action to support those students.
  • Conduct interviews with a student, family members, and school personnel to gather information to assess needs and priorities and review the provision and situation.
  • Undertake and record assessments of need, plan appropriate responses including monitoring and supervision.
  • Analyse and interpret relevant national, local and school research and data to inform understanding of needs and priorities.

  • Work with school staff to develop policies and practices to promote emotional literacy, positive behaviour and social relations and reduce exclusion.
  • Help staff to achieve constructive working relationships with students.
  • Collaborate with education and social services professionals to develop appropriate agency services for students and their families.
  • Ensure that there is a safe working and learning environment in which risks are properly assessed with regard to Child Protection Matters.
  • Liaise with other agencies to provide an effective Child Protection Service. Monitor and supervise the well being of students according to statutory and school guidelines.
  • Provide information, advocate for and on behalf of students and mobilise the necessary resources within the school and through external agencies.
  • Maintain records of support and intervention.
  • Produce reports for the Courts and professional colleagues.

  • Establish clear expectations and constructive working relationships among staff; develop team work and mutual support; devolve responsibilities and delegate tasks; evaluate practice.
  • Sustain motivation and provide support for other support staff to do so.
  • Provide supervision for PCS staff.
  • Review staff as required by the PCS Performance Management Policy.
  • Audit training needs of staff.
  • Lead professional development of support staff through example and support, and
co-ordinate the provision of high quality professional development by methods such
as presentation and coaching, drawing on other sources of expertise as necessary.
  • Work with the Head of the Learning Support and Development Faculty and of the
staff with SEN expertise to ensure that students’ needs are met.
  • Ensure that the Headteacher, Strategic Leadership Team and governors are well informed about support policies, plans and priorities, the success in meeting objective targets and support professional development plans.
  • Maintain and explore opportunities to develop and incorporate new resources from inside and outside the school.
  • Analyse and interpret relevant national, local and school research and data to inform policies, practices, expectations and targets etc.
