What is the Workshop about?
It will deal withseveral important aspects of thelectionary text options, thetheology of Mark, the various genre ofnarration and the passionaccount. It will guide the participantsto do a total survey of Mark in thematterof organization, plot, redactional outcomes, theology ofdiscipleship, parables and passion.Dr. Hewitt will go intosome depth on 4-5 periscopes that are both critical to the readingsinthe RCL (Revised Common Lectionary) and critical also to understanding Mark's portrait ofJesus. Finally, at least 30 minutes will be devoted to describingtwo or threemethods for preparing to preach from Mark; this willNOT be "how to preach from Mark" but rather "how to engage in aclose reading of the Markan text in a way that leads to profoundinsights that enlighten my pastoral concerns and that can be workedinto an intelligible, attractive message."No one should claim toteach another preacherhow to preach; that kind of thing isavailable on the Internet in theform of "canned" sermons.
Dr. Hewitt’s approach to biblical preaching isthis: “by close a profoundencounter made possible by a sustained attention to the gospel textresulting in new andprofound insights; these insights areintegrated with the current pastoral concerns that occupy mythoughts. In this way my preaching is fuelled both by the biblicaltext and my pastoral concerns."
