APPENDIX A

New recommedations for October 2016

1. Introduction

All data in the this document, is associated tab delimited file and the PBCL UnitsRecommendations file are informative and for recommended use and guidance only.

The linkage to units of measurement has focussed on items with a numerical report as units are more firmly established for these items. The ‘units of measurement’ for most of microbiology and much immunology are semi-quantitative with a range of reporting largely reflecting the methodological developments in this area and relative lack of internationally agreed methods or calibrators.

The gaps in the attribution of units, the ‘for review’ notes and scanty DCI codes all indicate that the updating of PBCL is an ongoing process and requires further specialist input and peer review. This is despite considerable review by specialists and items being available for comment via professional websites. For some analytes there is a lack of consensus concerning units and these items are marked with ‘check’.

Laboratories are encouraged to adopt these units of measurement as soon as possible. However when changing reporting units of measurement, users must be fully informed and any related changes to historical results within databases must also be anticipated and addressed. In addition, downstream changes to how reporting units are displayed within other databases populated from the LIMS (i.e. GP systems, specialty databases and order comm systems) also require the appropriate level of attention to ensure patient safety issues do not arise as an unintended consequence.

2. Scope

This document describes the content of the Units of Measurement Result Recommended Representations aligned with the October 2016 PBCL Release (Version 1.034)

3. Units of Measure in this Release.

The Units files are produced under the guidance and recommendations of Professionals from the Royal Collage of Pathologists. Users should confirm references to the Read V2 and V3 codes, terms and statuses within the Recommended Units files against the Core files before use. The files should only be used in association with PBCL 22.0.0_20161001000001 and with the main October 2016 Read release files.

The content within this release has undergone reviews by the Primary Care Pathology (information standards) National User Group. This release was approved by the Primary Care Pathology National Advisory Group for publication.

For technical deployment a tab delimited file containing only Current (C) unit entries is also published alongside this PDF reference document.

Recommendation: Full end-to-end testing is performed when units are amended.
