HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICY

1. Purpose:

Students who engage in physical education develop the knowledge, skills, understanding and motivation to seek health and physical competence through lifelong involvement in physical activity. Students will examine factors that affect people’s participation and performance in physical activity and the ongoing promotion of health.

The Physical and Sport Education in Schools policy (Exec. Memo. No. 764), which set the benchmark for physical and sport education throughout Australia ensures all students from Prep to Year 10 are participating in weekly timetabled sport and physical education classes.

2. Aims:

2.1 To develop in students an understanding of the need for a balance between the physical, social and emotional components of health to effectively function as an individual.

2.2 To understand the influence of diverse values, attitudes and beliefs on personal and group decisions and behaviour related to health, safety and physical activity.

2.3 To understand the range and accessibility of resources that promote health and participation in physical activity.

2.4 For students to experience skilled participation in play, games, dance, gymnastics, aquatics, sport, outdoor activities and recreation.

2.5 To understand how food choices provide nutrients for energy and growth.

2.6 To learn fundamental motor skills as part of the physical education and sport program and not as an isolated skills program.

3. Implementation:

3.1 The Physical Education Program encompasses the following areas –

Ball Handling Major Games/Sport Fitness

Minor and Modified Games Swimming Athletics

Dance Outdoor Activities Bike Education

Perceptual Motor Program Gymnastics

The P.E. program will follow current DE&T guidelines.

3.2 Swimming lessons, following the Royal Life Saving Society “Swim and Survive’ program will be offered to all children during the year and will be recorded in log books by swimming staff with copies provided to parents.

3.3 The Physical Education co-ordinator will act as a resource to class teachers and will be responsible for the program budget, purchases, maintenance, storage and distribution of materials and equipment.

3.4 The school is a member of the Victorian Primary Schools Sport Association and as such, participates in district and zone sporting events. School staff will be fully responsible for the selection of students for sporting teams.

3.5 Children are to wear suitable clothing/footwear/hat for physical activities.

3.6 The school has an ISDES program that supports the health program.

3.7 Children in years 4-6 will have the ACHPER Fitness Test administered twice yearly.

3.8 External programs such as Life Education will be drawn to support and compliment programs as appropriate.

3.9 Student achievement will be reported against C.S.F. outcomes to parents twice yearly.

4. Review:

4.1 The Health and P.E.Policy will be reviewed every 3 years.
