FLEETWOOD, THE MOUNT

and ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Thursday 21st September 2017 at 10.30am

North Euston Hotel, Rossall Room FY7 6BN

A bracing breath of sea air was the cure for all ills for Lancashire work-people, and the string of seaside resorts bordering Morecambe Bay provided ample opportunity for a dip in the sea and a week of high jinks.

But Fleetwood was created as a resort long before the growth of mass tourism on this coast. Sir Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood had visited St. Leonard’s-on-Sea during the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign, and noted the new fashion for sea bathing as a healthy pursuit. There he met the talented architect Decimus Burton; together they dreamed of a northern equivalent on Sir Peter’s land north of his home, Rossall Hall. Fleetwood, named after his mother, became an early resort built in elegant, Regency style. So distinguished is the architecture in the town that there are 45 Listed Buildings between here and Rossall Hall. The North Euston Hotel and the adjacent Queen’s Terrace are Grade II, and so is the pavilion on The Mount, which we shall visit. (see

After our Annual General Meeting, we shall hear about the restorations which are transforming this elegant town and its parks.

‘Working at Wyre’ will be a presentation by Mark Fenton about his role as Landscape Architect for the Borough and the seaside projects undertaken in recent years. An introduction will also be given to the history of the Mount Garden which we will visit in the afternoon.

A light lunch will be served after the presentation; coffee and tea served at 10am.

Guided visit after lunch

A generous donation by Mrs Lofthouse, whose family produce ‘Fisherman’s Friends’ from Fleetwood, funded work in 2016 to reinstate 300linear metres of railings, restore shelters and recreate rockeries. Our tour will take in these areas as well as the buildings and landscape areas which are the focus of an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
